[Newsgroups] Best Usenet Server for the money?

Ok I am considering jumping in to usenet. I know this question has been asked a million times, but things change so fast the answers to the old ones don't really apply to today.

My criteria is I don't need just a massive amount of downloads per month. I just want to be able to download a few files here and there.(Ex. My cable provider tends to mess up some time, so I might want to download some missed episodes etc.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yah I have been researching since I posted this and it is looking more and more like Astraweb is going to be the one. I am currently on a free trial with Giganews(don't plan on keeping it). I just mainly wanted to get a feel for usenet before I dove in.

What he said. I used to do this with AT&T when they still offered USENET service. I would just use my pay account to fill in the gaps, but now I have to rely on AstraWeb for the whole kit and caboodle.

What is your download speed? If it is fast I suggest trying the Astraweb unlimited DSL ($15 for the first month). If your download speed is less than 2 megabit try the unlimited plan ($10 for the first month). This will give you a feel for how much you download . You can switch to the pay per download at any time your downloads don't justify an unlimited plan. I am going to switch from pay per download to unlimited because I have downloaded 120GB per month in the last two months. My connection is only 1.5 megabit so unlimited DSL doesn't help me much.

I have a 4mb connection. I am pretty sure I would not use anywhere near 120GB a month. I am having trouble thinking of enough things to download to use up my 10GB trial with Giganews.

I can't imagine using 120GB a month unless there is something else to download on Usenet that I am not currently aware of.

Years ago you couldnt..but we have not had a problem giving porn groups to paypal users either. I think in years past, Paypal was strictly against it, but they have eased up, just the providers who have been around a long time have not been notified of the changes I guess.

Well dont pay $10 for a limited speed account or $15 for a faster one. Signup using the link in the following thread and pay $11/mo instead:

But it's not worth it for him if he's only going to be downloading a few GB per month. He'd be much better off with a block account.

Thanks for suggesting the $11 deal. I was going to switch to the $10 unlimited to save $5 per month but for $1 per month I went with the faster plan. Unfortunately my download speed is only 1.5 Mbs so I don’t gain a lot.

Anyone that *isn't* highwinds should fill the bill
giganews / astraweb / usenetnow i believe are all good and some offer block accounts of gigs.

Use a search engine to find "astraweb special".
$11 US as long as it's active. Block is fine too,and doesn't expire, but the specials price is so reasonable and many times more data for the cost. It's not difficult to use 100 GB in a single month.

Any idea when that special ends?

Re: [Newsgroups] Best Usenet Server for the money?

I'm not sure when the Astraweb deal will end but it's been running for several months and the service has held up well through the growth.

If you want unlimited Usenet access and are looking for value then here's a few current specials:
- UseNetServer (Highwinds) - $10 a month
- UseNetNow (Swintec is an active forum member) - $10.17 a month
- Astraweb - $11 a month

- NGR

Re: [Newsgroups] Best Usenet Server for the money?

I found an Astraweb reseller as well. It is a site called Bintube.com and they offer a free usenet client that allows you to stream movies while you download them. From what I have read since they are reselling Astraweb the free version will work with Astraweb as well. Has anyone given this software a try?

Sign up for the Astraweb deal and try it for a month. If you don’t download very much you can switch it to the block plan at any time. Its only $11 to try it.

Oh it is not that I don't plan on trying it. It is just that I am still using my Giganews trial. =p

I went ahead with the 180gb block from astraweb. I think I will last for long enough on that to justify it instead of a unlimited account. Thank you all for the help!

I have a 14.95 plan from newshosting, It maxes out my speed and in my dumb test seems to be faster than astraweb and powerusent.

So I stick with them

I used »www.comparere.com.

There are unlimited plans under $11. They are from newshosting and usenetserver. The cheapest is $7,90 a month. With Usenetserver you will have enough connections (20) to max out your internet service provider downstream.

They may not have an affiliate account with Astraweb yet, are you expecting a REVIEW site to provide REVIEWS for end users without an affiliate relationship telling them what to say?! [/sarcasm off]
