| Cableone Throttles nntp traffic and lies about it.
Beyond their threshold limits, cableone throttles nntp traffic beyond standard speeds when you've exceeded threshold limits.
So this means, my 3 Mbit connection, is throttled to 1.5Mb, fine, I hate your policy but you at least have the balls to tell me about it. But once I'm on standard speeds, my usenet traffic drops to exactly half of 1.5Mb. But when I connect to the encrypted servers on port 443 or 563, my speed goes up to full 1.5Mb.
I've called cableone on this issue, and wasted about 30 minutes of my time being lied to. I'll admit the cs reps were probably being lied to by someone higher up, so I didn't get angry with them. But I did tell the rep that I can easily test and reproduce results that show what they're telling me simply isn't true, and that I didn't blame him because his superiors were probably lying to them.
Lying to your customers is acceptable for cableone apparently. |

1 edit | 1) I am not doubting you are being capped.
2) I do not live near Idaho Falls, my situation may be different.
3) It is still possible that CableONE is not actually technically lieing to you and you are getting the result you see.
Here in Mississippi, CableONE is a 'last mile' ISP, all their trunks are provided by Level3 Or AT&T.
So what if AT&T or Level3 is throttling NNTP? CableONE can tell you they are NOT throttling NNTP with a straight face, only applying the 1.5 Meg cap that IS done locally. And yet NNTP is slowed, just not by CableONE.
Do a TRACERT, see how quickly your trace is not via CableONE but by some other carrier, often AT&T or Level3)
This not an excuse, just showing how you can be throttled without them lieing. I want you cursing the right bastards. -- I tried to remain child-like, all I achieved was childish. |

| reply to SirRoxen I hate to say it, but he's right. I noticed this as well. When I was on the 8MB plan, my news bandwidth would dump to exactly 2Mb during the standard period where as it should have been at 4Mb.
I can confirm this by using other ports that where non-standard to NNTP. On other ports, the throttle was gone.
Jim's got a good point as well. |

And although cableone may not be fully at fault, they should certainly know how their services are managed. |

| Did CableONE tell you that you were not capped, or did they tell you CableONE was not capping you?
I am betting CableONE HAS no management of the Qwest lines, they would have to guess what was done upstream.
There was a great deal of anguish when Bell Canada capped all ISPs using their trunks without telling anyone, it does happen.

| said by jimbopalmer :Did CableONE tell you that you were not capped, or did they tell you CableONE was not capping you? They've said multiple things, along the lines of "We" do not throttle usenet traffic, and There is no usenet throttling. |

| reply to SirRoxen I just moved to a CableOne area... was previously in a MediaCom area...
ugh... CableOne is horrible.
I was on the 20mbit plan with 2mbit upload at MediaCom for $65 a month. Granted, I didn't always get the speed, but I rarely ever dropped below 12mbit down and upload was fairly constant. Here, I'm paying $55 a month for a mere 5mbit and 512kbit download... but I can't get this thing beyond 2mbit download and 276kbit upload, even after midnight when there's supposed to be no capping.
This is very frustrating. |
