Stormy weekend for central, southeastern USA

Following a very stormy Friday in parts of the mid-South, scattered severe thunderstorms are forecast to develop again across much of the Plains, Midwest, South, and East through the weekend.

A large swath of the central and eastern USA is under the gun Saturday and Sunday for severe thunderstorms and heavy rain, stretching from the Dakotas in the north; to Oklahoma, northern Texas, and Arkansas in the South; to the Carolinas and Georgia in the East. The cause for the weather havoc is a slow-moving front that will first sink to the South this weekend, then move back to the north by next week.

When it's not raining, most of the South and Southeast will be typically hot and humid. Only the upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and far Northeast will enjoy high temperatures in the 70s.

Cool, showery West— Parts of the Southwest and Rockies will see isolated to scattered thunderstorms this weekend, along with below-average temperatures. None of the thunderstorms are expected to reach severe levels, however. The culprit is an upper-level trough of low pressure situated over the Great Basin.

Heat building— A large upper-level ridge of high pressure will expand across Texas this weekend and into the Midwest by early next week. This will cause high temperatures to skyrocket well into the 90s and 100s, some 5 to 10 degrees above average.

New Mexico fire threat— Just as it has been for much of the recent week, all of New Mexico and portions of eastern Arizona and far western Texas remain at greatest risk for wildfires, due to low humidity and strong winds.

Tropical update— Both the Atlantic and Pacific basins remain quiet, with no tropical activity expected through the weekend or early next week.

Why is it that people who never pay attention to the weather are always the first to complain.
