Sad but true. Taxes are getting too high. However, a recent poll showed almost 75% of NYC residents have no plan on leaving.
My house in NYC went down slightly in assessed value slightly and due to an increase in the tax rate my bill is about the same. My property has increased by over 250 times its' purchase price 35+ years ago and has gone up about 100% in the last 10 years.
Look at places such as Phoenix, Miami, Fort Meyers and Las Vegas where houses have dropped 50% or more in a few years. My car is about the average price of a home in Detroit and I drive a very practical car. I have friends who left the city because they thought the grass was greener on the other side. They have had rude awakenings. The have filed for bankruptcy or are under water on their mortgages. NYC has held very strong despite the fact that the financial industry has taken a huge hit. Our schools are better than they were 10 years ago and crime is much lower than it is in many major cities. The unemployment numbers are high but still much better than other places and those who are still employed and bought 10 years ago are still way ahead of the rest of the country.
It is tough on those with a fixed income who are retired but those who are employed and bought before the bubble burst are way ahead.
I work hard and continue to draw a good salary. My commission has been totally wiped out but I still manage to save by not eating out in Manhattan several nights a week and cutting back on a few other things. Not doing your job will have you unemployed. Now is the time to work as hard as possible. There are two things in life that are guaranteed, death and taxes. I was fortunate and never worried about living on a budget until a year ago. When I really looked at how many things I spent money on, it was easy to make cuts.
