Optimum Online Ultra - Best Routers

I thought I'd start a thread on which routers people are using with their Ultra service. I have gone through a few so I'll break down what I've experienced.

Router 1: Linksys WRT310n with DD-WRT v24 SP1

I was unable to get the advertised speeds with this setup even after re-setting back to DD-WRT defaults.

With latest Stock firmware: Still unable to attain the advertised speeds

- Speeds were around 80 - 85mbit - This router apparently might not have a necessary gigabit WAN port necessary for top speeds.

Router 2: DGL-4300 - 75-85 latest firmware also does NOT have gigabit WAN port.

Router 3: Linksys WRT320n - Latest stock firmware.

- Speeds were on the mark at the 95 - 98 range. However I ran into an issue of after being connected, the router would have a bandwidth drain and my speeds would over time, decrease, necessitating a reboot. A friend of mine has this router with ultra and apparently does not experience this issue, YMMV.

Router 4: D-Link DIR-825

Gigabit WAN port and high end speeds. I have experienced with this model that after downloading large files or being connected for a while, the router would just stop working and I'd lose connectivity, forcing me to restart this router multiple times during the course of the day. This could have been a defective unit, YMMV.

Router 5: Apple AirPort Extreme N (Winter 2009 model) [currently on store shelves]

Consistent top end speed with loss only due to ISP network conditions, however it lacks some configuration features that most other routers have, e.g. dyndns etc. This router has a gigabit WAN port that can be forced into that or other operating modes.

If I had to recommend one of these I'd go with the Apple one due to the consistent speeds and stability. The lack of customization may turn some off to this router though.

Anyway, there you have my experiences, hope it helps some and please, feedback is always welcome, I am interested to see what routers Ultra users are using.

Re: Optimum Online Ultra - Best Routers

I would say the D-Link DGL-4500 might be able to do it and it has gigabit wan and lan ports.

The D-Link DIR-655 is cheap and should perform very well. It's max WAN-LAN throughput is way over 101Mbps.

Yeah, I saw that thread. It seemed to die out after that last commet so, I wanted to see what everyone else was using and ... maybe I guess vent my story out there.

The DIR-655 is cheap. And sadly problematic. Just like the 825 I've had to do a hard reboot just to get connectivity too many times. I might just have to jump to the apple.

I intalled the DIR-655 about a month ago with regular OOL, in preparation for Ultra, which is going to be installed in a few days. It has been working perfect, wired.

Have you been using it on Ultra? Do you use it wired or wireless?

Haven't been using it in Ultra yet. For no reason while on vonage it will cut out on us. Then we can't get back on for awhile. Then the wireless will drop for no reason ect ect ect.

Re: Optimum Online Ultra - Best Routers

I noted that with the d-link, after downloading large files off of usenet, via newsleecher and giganews, the router would just stop working, forcing me to do a hard reset to get back online. It would happen constantly to the point where I had to replace it.

DIR 655 with older firmware is rock solid reliable (e.g. v 1.11). Recent firmware update quality has been somewhat sketchy, though (and worse, some newer firmwares are not able to back out to earlier versions).

I've been running a DIR-655 for about a year and a half - I think it's using 1.21 firmware at the moment, and it's rock-solid with Ultra.
It only gets a reboot when I need to change forwarded ports, or when the power goes out. I turned off QOS and other unnecessary features except SPI firewall.

I have DIR-655 and getting Ultra installed today. Are there any special settings that I need to do? It is currently running fine on regular OOL.

I recently got the Linksys WRT610N and put the WIP DD-WRT on it. I've had it for 3 days and haven't had any issues yet. There are known issues with the wireless still, but I disabled the wireless radios and have been using a WRT54GL as a WAP with DD-WRT.

WRT610N Uptime: 3 days, 12:48 (Incoming: 133059 MB / Outgoing: 155600 MB)

Family of five that actively beats the crap out of the connection.

Edit:

Strange, the WRT310N on the SmallNetBuilder website gets better speeds than the WRT610N with the stock firmware but not with DD-WRT? I'm seeing my max speeds with DD-WRT on the WRT610N.

Id have to say i havent been able to find a consumer grade level router yet that does not degrade over time. Ive tried many Dlink and Linksys with stock firmwares.

Id really like to know if anyone has one that does not degrade over time.

My DIR-655 setup (I tested 102/15.4 on Ultra with this config) -

-All ALG services OFF
-QOS Engine OFF
-Traffic Shaping OFF
-WISH OFF
-SPI ON
-Manually Specified WAN port as 1000Mb

You can probably turn all of those things on with no ill effects, I just don't like it messing with my flow. Note that turning Application Layer Gateway (ALG) services off can complicate certain protocols that have trouble with a NAT (ie- your router.)
