Some of the guys I know who were shipboard radio operators could easily go over 40 wpm. The guy who taught the code classes I took as a youngster could smoke a cigarette, drink a cup of coffe, talk to you, AND carry on a conversation with somebody else on CW at well over 25 wpm.
Just amazing, as some days I have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time!

Several of the ones I could copy (my code sucks) were from 2-land and farther. I heard a few SSB qso's as well, but my receiver doesn't do SSB very well, so it was hard to keep tabs on.
