Good signal, low speeds

Hey everyone. I have a Franklin CDU-680 from Millenicom I got a while ago - I recently mounted and connected the 32" omni external antenna from 3GStore to improve my signal, and it did improve to about -72dBm. However I'm still a little unsatisfied with the speed.

That isn't super bad, but at my signal I should be able to get better speeds. My location is Nashville, MI zip 49073. I get constant EVDO Rev. A just fine, no problem as long as I'm connected to the omni. Any help is appreciated very much!

Thanks, Beli

If you are on a single T-1 tower your speed is very good. The most you can expect with a perfect signal strength is around 1.2MB down.

Here's my results with a -72dBm signal. Single T-1 tower.

I probably am on a single T1 tower then. Anyways though, I can live with this speed

Beli,
I'm no expert, but can share what worked for me.

I had a Pantech PX-500 and Wilson Omni. It was picking up two towers (there are apparently only two in range in my very rural area). My RSSI would bonce around and I didn't stay connected. Take a look at Jim_in_VA's website:

»evdotips.blogspot.com/

Look at how to use the debugging screen in the connection manager:
»evdotips.blogspot.com/2008/02/co···ens.html
»evdotips.blogspot.com/2008/03/de···ned.html

Look and see how many towers the omni is reading and follow his advice. I didn't do this when I had the omni, and recently went to a Sierra 598U and Wilson directional. When I used the debugging screen, I found I had the antenna pointed at the wrong tower for best service!

I have detailed this somewhat in another post in this section.

Long story short, I went from an intermittent connection and at best .3 down and .03 up with 260+ latency to a max of 1.4 down and .24 up with 170 latency. The Speedtests I've done since then have all been .7~.9 down and .2~.3 up with latency under 200. My connection has been steady for over a day! I used to have to power cycle the router at least once a day with the old setup.

What I can't understand on your Speedtest is the high latency and low upload rate. I think it may be worthwhile to pickup a directional antenna and try the debugging software.

Let us know how it works out.

I just ran another Speedtest:

This new setup rocks!!!
--
Old setup: Wilson omni, Cellmate 2000, Pantech PX-500 in Linksys WRT543G3-ST.
Current setup: Wilson yagi, Cellmate 2000, Sierra 598U in Cradlepoint MBR1000.
Pending: Cyfre CA-819 amp & parabolic grid.
Thanks to Jim_in_VA for the tips!

On the speedtest page look at the info block where it compares your test with the averages. Bottom line is if it's not there to start with no amount of fiddling, tweaking, antennas or amps will produce any significant results. Another point is I've notice latency has little effect on speed results. Low latency does not equate into higher speeds.

I would go with this, however even with the omni, I only pick up one tower. And fortunately it's not intermittent, I don't disconnect at all! It's great in terms of reliablilty. Considering what's been said I'm willing to say that I'm getting top speed from my tower.

from my experience. I was with AT&T, the day they released the iPhone, my signal was strong and solid, the speed dropped to sub dial-up. After several calls to tech, I stumbled on an honest tech to said "oh you noticed that"..

story short, switched to Sprint with a Mill BYOD plan.
when the leaves came out had to ad an Amp.

By the way...........I can't say enough about Jim in VA at EDVO Tips and Tweaks, his website has helped me navigate this moras of what I term BroadBand Redlining. Youse live in the wrong place, youse get no service.

Anyway...now Sprint has joined the SmartPhone revolution...let's sell the ability to send as much useless stuff as we can over our limited bandwidth....But let's not add any infastructure to support all the new bandwidth hungry apps.

So in good times, I get up to 1.9 downloads.
But when the Tower is clogged, .25. I know it's app overload becase my upload speeds are 4X the download speed.
All with a Strong signal.

Seems like a metaphor for our current financial hole....spend and expect more than you can support.

Was that a screed or what

You made me remember! I totally forgot - Palm Pre. Maybe that isn't helping. Let's hope that hype dies down soon.
