New PC & OS (Vista 64)-New Router also?

Hello

We're getting a new pc (HP m9500z) with Vista 64 and it's replacing our 6+ yr old Dell running XP. I've had a Linksys WRT54G for several years with AT&T DSL.

Do I need to "upgrade" to a newer router or a new revision? I don't use wireless as everything is wired but I may do so with the DISH/TV. Any benifit in getting a newer model?

If you use it wired to the router, there is no need to upgrade.

Not really, only if you need gigabit connectivity...aside of that, especially on a wired system, there would be no advantage to upgrading the router.

Poor advice. It would only be "outdated" if he used any functions which the current router does not support. As he is connected by ethernet, what possible benefit would a dual-band router offer the OP?

Re: New PC & OS (Vista 64)-New Router also?

I've been running Vista-64 Ultimate for just over a year. My old Linksys WRV54G works just fine with it. As pointed out above, there is no real need for a router upgrade just because you have a new OS.

I am considering upgrading my router some day as it does not support gigabit Ethernet. While my Internet connection is well under gigabit speeds, more of my newer internal devices support gigabit.

Yes, gigabit, and even 11n, at this point in time, tend to serve best from "within" the network, rather than adding any performance to one's internet connection! My NAS is gigabit connected, and disk transfer speeds are definitely better within my network over 11n wireless connection.

I would not say that an 11n router and/or gigabit connections are never useful, but, only in given situations...
