WARNING: Do not load the new Rogers Online Protection (ROP)

As a tech manager, I can tell you without a doubt that the new Rogers Online Protection suite produced by Radialpoint is absolute garbage.

My company’s technical services department has had nothing but problems with employees using this software; as a complimentary service we give limited tech support for users in our firm for their home computers (many people bring sensitive work home).

Everything from broken internal Windows system links to disrupted data transfers, general system slowdowns and crashes, but the worst is that after a simple test by one of our techs he was able to bypass the ROP firewall using a three-year old cracker application!

Our policy states that everyone must have up-to-date firewall and virus protection if they are to bring work data home. We normally allowed Rogers with Norton Internet Security to be acceptable for our home users, but after this fiasco I am now spending my weekend drafting new policies and trying to get all of our users’ home systems to uninstall this crap.

Notification has been made to Rogers Communications (CC: Radialpoint) but there has been no appropriate response thus far.

Until an independent third-party review can be done, I strongly recommend that no Rogers customer should install or use this software.

Regards.

Tristan

I agree, the Rogers Online Protection is not very good.

I've been telling everyone to avoid installing any software Rogers insists they "NEED".

Your firm was very accommodating by allowing users to install Norton Internet Security - I've had nothing but problems with Symantec's security packages, the very last being uninstalls that went horribly wrong.

Rogers Customers - avoid installing this crappy software, and tell Rogers to take their security suite and stuff it.

For home non-commercial users, there are good free alternatives, and even their paid packages are economical and worthwhile. Remember, if it came from Rogers, chuck it back at them.

i haven't had any issues...about the only complaint i have is the scans to seem to take a while (perhaps the program is a little slow at scanning, not sure).

hehe This garbage app has a lot of known problems (and they are trying to hide it from the public).

»Re: New Service? - Rogers Online Protection

I myself have contacted Raidialpoint (and Bell who used to SELL this garbage). No reply ever from Radial point. Bell said its beyond the scope of their support (even though they charged people for this "security" app) and Radial point has deleted their forum a few times now.

I was wondering when a tech would talk up.

Anyhow, as for the crashes, non-authentication with radial-points servers (yes this app communicates with radial point and must connect to them even if you turn off do not send data check mark, regardless what you read here: »Re: New Service? - Rogers Online Protection), and a host of other problems (unipopuphidden heh), I suggest that Rogers techs start learning how to support this app and/or be open and share all you find (unlike Bell).

The most common problems that I have seen were first with data transfers, when a user would copy multiple files to a USB key (I remember a couple were Kingston models) and the system would disconnect the drive unexpectedly causing the transfer to fail. Also, one user had problems burning DVDs. I suspect this may have been caused by a buffer underrun problem or something where the Rogers software is interfering with the data flow.

Another common type of problem was in Vista OS systems where the ‘Device Manager’ link under ‘Tasks’ in the ‘System’ menu would no longer work. This is caused by a conflicting shell extension within the Windows registry. If you are using Vista Home SP2 edition and have the Rogers software loaded, I suggest you check your computer to see if this link is broken.

All the problems were resolved after removing the ROP program.

The one person who will get the appropriate answers you require is Ellen Roseman. She'll work on your behalf to get the answers/reponses you need, even to publishing the results on her website. I suggest drafting a letter of to Ellen explaining what you've explain in your OP. Here's her e-mail address, including website address: » eroseman@thestar.ca

Hey Sempronius, thanks for the link.

Just got back from Best Buy off Queensway, picked up Norton Internet Security 2009 (it’s on sale for $49 until 06/18) to check out, as I need to find a good, simple to use security suite for our Rogers users. So far so good, I also noticed you can install this program on up to 3 PCs. My test system is a Dell E521, AMD 5600+, 3 GB Ram, Vista Home. Install was very fast, updates were also fast and smooth - have not noticed any real system slowdowns. This computer is fully loaded with software (Office Ultimate, Adobe Master Collection, etc.). I’ll be running tests all day, so if I find anything worth noting I’ll make another post.

Of note, on this system using bootspeed.vbs I tested the following boot times...

With Rogers Online Protection: 118 seconds

After uninstalling ROP with no other firewall/AV programs: 88 seconds

With Norton IS 2009: 95 seconds

the odd thing is, the only people complaining about it are the couple in this thread and in my other thread...i would think if it were a widespread issue, not only would there be more replies, but a few threads about it...there isn't.

dirtyjeffer,

The problems I am seeing tend to be with Vista Home systems.

This may be because very few people who read/know about these forums would install any Rogers supplied software.

You're welcome. And BTW, NIS 2009 is a great product. Further to this, you might be interested in checking out Comodo Internet Security Suite »personalfirewall.comodo.com/ I use the free firewall together with Norton AntiVirus 2009 and works perfectly; the perfect partner. It has high reviews, especially by PC mag. Read up on the CEO Melih Abdulhayoglu's bio »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melih_Abdulhayoglu

give it time.. its new.

Also this forum isn't a heavy traffic forum.

You should have seen Bell.ca's old forum before they changed to the newer one. its was FULL of this shit.

Also, you haven't seen radial points forum witch they deleted a few times. heh

For some it just works and they need to know nothing else. This is likely your case.

Rogers is probably full of support calls. Unless you work there jeffy don't play it down just yet. heh

xtech1, the problems are across the board. Vista, XP etc... As said in another topic, they fixed it up a bit in the past few months.

Also, this thing is only 32-bit.

Why would you install ROP? Rogers' software is bad (trying to be polite) and not even worth looking at.

I use strictly free versions of antivirus (Avira Antivir), firewall (Comodo firewall) and antispyware (Superantispyware) and all work amazingly well.

I just noticed one glitch last night that I sent over to Norton tech support via email. The NIS 2009 settings for 'Microsoft Office Automatic Scan' refuses to be turned OFF.

....waiting to hear back.

^ Ok, all is well now. The glitch required a manual update a second time. The error was not resolved via auto-update.

Haven't tried ROP nor will I ever try it.
I've also had Bell Sympatico in the past and they also offered me their own rebranded security suite of sorts... I'm not saying that these products don't work or aren't adequate, I just know that there are better products on the market.

all the same

The Rogers security software
The Bell Security software
The videotron security software

It's all the same software by the same company, Radial-Point.

Only the ISP branding on this sourced software may change (ie the name of it, but they are all the same).
