| reply to xtech1 Re: WARNING: Do not load the new Rogers Online Protection (ROP)
I used the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of all the remnants of the original Roger's Virus suite before installing the new one. It was more or less " Out of the frying pan and into the fire " though. The new suite was horrible and basically slowed my system to a standstill! So, I got rid of all of Roger's stuff again and went with Avira. It works seamlessly and so far, absolutely no complaints. A full scan takes half the time the Rogers scan did!
AND, my 2 computers, one with Vista and the older one with XP SP3 are like new machines! They load much, much quicker!!!
I'd had a problem on the XP with a memory conflict and had blamed it on some other installations I had made around the same time I loaded the original Rogers suite, and now no more problem. So I suggest that anyone having some weird problems on their computers should try removing ALL the rogers security crap, and seeing if this helps.
Ah yes, isn't computing fun! |

| reply to xtech1 I have been using Rogers Online Protection by RadialPoint for about a month now on Windows XP. Here are the major problems I have noticed:
1. Full system anti-virus scans take 4-6 hours and my computer is very slow during that time. I have a laptop with a core 2 Duo 2.26 Ghz processor and 4GB of ram so there is really no reason for this. The old Norton version of ROP took much less time and did not affect my computer's useability.
2. Scan scheduling does not always take. I tried to schedule scans for Saturday night but ROP keeps trying to scan my computer at random times. It may be trying to make up for missed scans, not sure.
3. Full system anti-spyware scans are only slightly faster than the anti-virus scans. They take about 2-3 hours and my computer is almost unuseable during that time.
4. The anti-virus does not appear to do anything with viruses it finds. It has found two (I think they were both false positives but not sure). In both cases I had to review the scan log, track down the file, and delete it myself. The fact that it found a virus was also not clearly shown. I like to see a dialog box with a squirming virus to warn me, not a simple 1 in a column titled "viruses".
5. Forcing a virus definitions update ties up your computer for about 2 or 3 minutes for some strange reason. Automatic updates don't do that fortunately and are done pretty regularly.
Now some positive points:
1. The interface is decent and easy to get around. It's not the best thing I've ever seen but it's easier to understand than both Norton and AVG (for me at least).
2. The firewall (not sure how effective it is) gives you the option of allowing each program internet access as that program first tries. This was helpful in letting me know why my internet is so slow after boot-up. About a dozen programs are busy phoning home. The firewall does not produce a lot of warnings like Comodo or older versions of Zone Alarm.
3. I get daily virus definition updates.
I wouldn't recommend Rogers Online protection and I will be uninstalling it myself. It's not terrible but there are much better solutions out there. It is definitely a huge step backwards from the previous online protection with Norton that Rogers offered. That package was much slicker. AVG is also better, although the free version is anti-virus only. |

| reply to Warhorse i loaded the Avira free program, but i don't like how it pops up a "Hey, it's a hacker" advert every time the program updates itself (daily) wanting you to subscribe to the Premium version...i can't find anyway to turn this off...is there one?...i have used AVG in the past and it didn't have any annoying pop-ups in it...the program does seem to run a little faster, but it still took a couple of hours for a scan...when i used AVG it was non-obtrusive, but didn't slow my machines down when running and it only took about 30 minutes at most for a scan. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

Look what you give away for the "free" with Rogers! |

| reply to dirtyjeffer I can live with one pop-up.
How do you live with rogers web-injection taking up 1/4 of your webpages?
I wake up click the button. End of story.
But hey, by all means give Rogers and radial point and all their "inner-circle" your info per the TOS you agree to by installing this thing.
I'll click a button over that any day.
Take you pick of poison that's "free". |

| Yesterday I received a spam, umm sorry email notification, from Rogers touting their super-duper ROP security system. I might try loading it on a spare machine to see just what exactly it does and/or tries to do. -- "I reject your reality and substitute my own." |

| reply to MinPower2 MinPower2: You've defined exactly the problem I have had since installing Rogers Protection on both my laptop and desktop. The system slows to a crawl, and it won't follow the scan schedule I give it. This is most annoying, and in addition my desktop (with Vista Home) has begun crashing and popping out of programs for no reason.

MinPower2: ...The system slows to a crawl, and it won't follow the scan schedule I give it. ... Me too. Same as MinPower2 and Swan guy. Moreover after having ROB installed for a week my computer started to show signs of a malware infestation.
So yesterday I de-installed ROP and installed Windows OneCare which I had as a package deal with another computer.
As soon as I inserted the OneCare disk, it warned me that I had an "unwanted" program. I cleared it then did a complete scan and it found another which it automatically cleaned.
My computer functions fine now.
I am sorry to lose Norton. It performed well for me. Obviously when I replaced Norton with ROB, my defences went slack.
Stay away from ROB. Not only does it tie up your computer for hours with unpredictable scans, it doesn't do the job.

| Since Rogers Norton was being discontinued I purchased NIS 2009 for my systems (incidentally, highly recommend versus even the version Rogers had) but I left the Rogers Norton on one system just to see when it actually stopped working.
As of right now it's still working fine; says my service is active and updates fine. |

| reply to dirtyjeffer NB here, but I found this forum looking for a reason why I SHOULD update my Rogers Protection. Heard a lot of bad stuff about it. I also do not like to be told I HAVE TO install stuff! Google brought me here, and I just had to register to post here .... to your comment! Just had to let you know that many folks (sheep) out there would not even question this "upgrade", because Rogers says they need it! Then when the problems start its too late! It probably has not even dawned on them yet, to think that the issues they might be having, stem from this new "upgrade"? I would rather get info from a field tech, than from a Rogers tech any day. So I'll speak, if I may, for those who have not found this forum ...yet! I glad I found this info, BEFORE the demanded "Upgrade"!
I'm not very IT savvy, like many of you here, but I just hate having to waste time with preventable software issues on my PC. I'm not getting any younger! LOL! Thanks ...
I'll be off now .... to search the I-net for some good "FREE" AV/protection software .... Suggestions are appreciated! |

| meh, to each their own...i removed ROP, but as i said, i didn't have any problems with it (other than scans did take a long time).
i am using Avira AntiVir Personal (free edition)...i don't notice much of a difference, other than the annoying pop ups i get every day...the scans are a little faster, but still seem to take quite some time (about 70 minutes for a full scan, compared to ROP which was about 100 minutes for a full scan). -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

| reply to sbrook said by sbrook :New AVG is equally annoying forcing a popup through everything you've got running. Those can be turned off if your meaning the "Email program is running etc." its in the advanced options. If not, then my bad for missunderstanding what you meant. I have no pop ups and I run latest AVG about the only complaint I have is it that by default it checks on bootup and "ties down" the system on initial boot up checking for updates. |

| Avira pops up a stupid window every day at 11pm...quite often, i am playing a game and flying a plane...of course, this causes the computer to switch to the desktop, and by the time i close the window and get back to the game, i have crashed into a mountain...then some other noob gets the plane i had and spend the rest of the game on foot...also, today it popped up a "trojan detection" message and i was close to "deleting" the file...after getting little info from Avira about it, i was fortunate enough to find some info using google form another forum...turns out to be a false positive in today's update.
i think i am going to uninstall this program and go back to Rogers Online Protection...i never had any issues with it and i could shut it down if i wanted to. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

| i realize the pop up is coming because i have the "free version" (as it asks me to pay for the upgraded service)...but i don't want to pay for it, nor do i want to be hassled about it either...that is why i am going back to ROP. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |
