I'm no expert, but can share what worked for me.
I had a Pantech PX-500 and Wilson Omni. It was picking up two towers (there are apparently only two in range in my very rural area). My RSSI would bonce around and I didn't stay connected. Take a look at Jim_in_VA's website:

I didn't do this when I had the omni, and recently went to a Sierra 598U and Wilson directional. When I used the debugging screen, I found I had the antenna pointed at the wrong tower for best service!
I have detailed this somewhat in another post in this section.
Long story short, I went from an intermittent connection and at best .3 down and .03 up with 260+ latency to a max of 1.4 down and .24 up with 170 latency.
I would go with this, however even with the omni, I only pick up one tower. And fortunately it's not intermittent, I don't disconnect at all! It's great in terms of reliablilty. Considering what's been said I'm willing to say that I'm getting top speed from my tower.
