Re: WARNING: Do not load the new Rogers Online Protection (ROP)

Hey Sempronius, thanks for the link.

Just got back from Best Buy off Queensway, picked up Norton Internet Security 2009 (it’s on sale for $49 until 06/18) to check out, as I need to find a good, simple to use security suite for our Rogers users. So far so good, I also noticed you can install this program on up to 3 PCs. My test system is a Dell E521, AMD 5600+, 3 GB Ram, Vista Home. Install was very fast, updates were also fast and smooth - have not noticed any real system slowdowns. This computer is fully loaded with software (Office Ultimate, Adobe Master Collection, etc.). I’ll be running tests all day, so if I find anything worth noting I’ll make another post.

Of note, on this system using bootspeed.vbs I tested the following boot times...

With Rogers Online Protection: 118 seconds

After uninstalling ROP with no other firewall/AV programs: 88 seconds

With Norton IS 2009: 95 seconds

the odd thing is, the only people complaining about it are the couple in this thread and in my other thread...i would think if it were a widespread issue, not only would there be more replies, but a few threads about it...there isn't.

dirtyjeffer,

The problems I am seeing tend to be with Vista Home systems.

This may be because very few people who read/know about these forums would install any Rogers supplied software.

give it time.. its new.

Also this forum isn't a heavy traffic forum.

You should have seen Bell.ca's old forum before they changed to the newer one. its was FULL of this shit.

Also, you haven't seen radial points forum witch they deleted a few times. heh

For some it just works and they need to know nothing else. This is likely your case.

Rogers is probably full of support calls. Unless you work there jeffy don't play it down just yet. heh

xtech1, the problems are across the board. Vista, XP etc... As said in another topic, they fixed it up a bit in the past few months.

Also, this thing is only 32-bit.

You're welcome. And BTW, NIS 2009 is a great product. Further to this, you might be interested in checking out Comodo Internet Security Suite »personalfirewall.comodo.com/ I use the free firewall together with Norton AntiVirus 2009 and works perfectly; the perfect partner. It has high reviews, especially by PC mag. Read up on the CEO Melih Abdulhayoglu's bio »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melih_Abdulhayoglu

NB here, but I found this forum looking for a reason why I SHOULD update my Rogers Protection. Heard a lot of bad stuff about it. I also do not like to be told I HAVE TO install stuff!
Google brought me here, and I just had to register to post here .... to your comment!
Just had to let you know that many folks (sheep) out there would not even question this "upgrade", because Rogers says they need it! Then when the problems start its too late!
It probably has not even dawned on them yet, to think that the issues they might be having, stem from this new "upgrade"?
I would rather get info from a field tech, than from a Rogers tech any day.
So I'll speak, if I may, for those who have not found this forum ...yet!
I glad I found this info, BEFORE the demanded "Upgrade"!

I'm not very IT savvy, like many of you here, but I just hate having to waste time with preventable software issues on my PC. I'm not getting any younger! LOL!
Thanks ...

I'll be off now .... to search the I-net for some good "FREE" AV/protection software ....
Suggestions are appreciated!

meh, to each their own...i removed ROP, but as i said, i didn't have any problems with it (other than scans did take a long time).

i am using Avira AntiVir Personal (free edition)...i don't notice much of a difference, other than the annoying pop ups i get every day...the scans are a little faster, but still seem to take quite some time (about 70 minutes for a full scan, compared to ROP which was about 100 minutes for a full scan).
