| SB6120 - Time is wrong
I noticed that the time is wrong when I login to my Motorola SURFboard SB6120 via 192.168.100.1.
Resetting to factory defaults, restarting, etc. do not fix the problem.
Motorola says to get firmware updates from the ISP. My ISP (Comcast) claims they do not do firmware updates on modems.
Any ideas on how to fix the time? I am guessing it is a Standard vs. Daylight Savings Time issue.
I live in Spokane, WA USA.
Here is the info about my modem:
Model Name: SB6120 Vendor Name: Motorola Firmware Name: SB6120-1.0.1.7-SCM00-NOSH Boot Version: PSPU-Boot 1.0.0.4m1 Hardware Version: 1.0 Firmware Build Time: Mar 20 2009 17:48:45 |

Is it the default of 1970-01-01 00:00: something ?
Was it ever correct ?
The modem needs to talk to the T.O.D. (Time Of Day) server to be able to display the current and correct time.
The server may be offline, or for whatever the reason, the modem is not able to receive that information from it.
If you are indeed referring to standard vs. daylight savings time, modems can't differentiate that and will display standard time.
Either way, it is really not something to be concerned with other than having the correct time stamps on the error log entries.
In no way does it have any affect on connectivity.

Because im with Cox for my ISP, and that the lastest one they are pushing to the modem.
Anyways thats not your time and date. that just the modems firmware info page pretty much.
EDIT: The correct time and date will be on the main page which is the page that loads when you first load this page »192.168.100.1/ |

How about *ignorant* due to a lack of proper/thorough training ? |

Any updates are sent to the cable ISP's who BTW, may alter them somewhat and then install them via their network.
There is no way for the manufacturer, or for the end user to further update them directly. |

1 edit | reply to jeffd10 Not true, Comcast does. The manufacturer sends the firmware to the service provider (Comcast) and the provider pushes it out to the equipment at thier disclosure. The manufacturer wouldnt have the ability to send it out to each customer anyway, and even if they provided a link on the website the end user (customer) has no ability to install it without voiding the warrenty. |

@comcast.net | reply to Zorlac I am looking at the main page for date and time. For instance, it currently says:
"Jun 14 2009 21:14:47"
It is 10:15 PM in WA state right now. |

Nothing to fix. Daylight savings being a artifical and highly variable as to where it's applied, on a nationwide/worldwide. network it would add confusion. It does not effect your throughput in anyway. |

Most products reference time via UTC (zulu time) and then take an offset to that based on the time zone. Each time zone has a well known and specific offset based on the date. Operating systems and a host of phones and other devices navigate this properly. Not that difficult to do. |

| reply to Zorlac Nothing to change. Your modem is correct. DST is pretty much meaningless for the modems. There is nothing they do that would depend on that time.
Comcast does push out the new firmware to modems but not at the customers request. Anyone at the call center would really not know anything about it. The modem will get it when its hooked up to the network. |

That is correct, and makes sense for individual computers, O/S's, phone etc. where the correct current local time is of interest to the user, and worth the extra code. However for a modem, with limited memory/processing, which is not intended as a timekeeping device, it is a very low priority. Further, when an network engineer is tracing a problem from point A to B...Z, they shouldn't need to know your exact local time zone/DST status (examples would be Arizona or Indiana where you could be across the street from another timezone which may or may not use DST) all they need to know is the standard offset for the NOC/CRAN of each point, it makes finding 1 or more transactions occuring at a given time, out of the billions that are logged much easier. |

| reply to Zorlac And even if they bend over and push another newer firmware to you, the chances of it actually fixing your issue is extremely slim. I never heard of a firmware update fix a time issue.
