The initial/then current version is installed by the manufacturer when the modem is shipped from the factory.

Any updates are sent to the cable ISP's who BTW, may alter them somewhat and then install them via their network.

There is no way for the manufacturer, or for the end user to further update them directly.

Not true, Comcast does. The manufacturer sends the firmware to the service provider (Comcast) and the provider pushes it out to the equipment at thier disclosure. The manufacturer wouldnt have the ability to send it out to each customer anyway, and even if they provided a link on the website the end user (customer) has no ability to install it without voiding the warrenty.
