1 edit | Illustrated Easy Single Line MLPPP Setup instructions
First Contact Teksavvy and have your account changed over to the new realm, you will get a new Login (name@wiredhighspeed.com). Email Login and settings will remain unchanged so no worries about email accounts. There is a $4 monthly charge to be put on the new realm. After that these instructions are for a quick easy basic setup with a modem ( I use a Speedstream 516), and a router (I use a Linksys WRT54g with standard firmware no changes).

Further instructions on how to set up your MLPPP connection in your operating system, I will refer you to a guide already well written by smarter people then I.
This guide is in PDF Format (Direct Link)
»/r0/download/1···uide.pdf
Hope this helps some new people get started. I have confirmed this set up is non throttled and does not interfere with Private Trackers or MSN Messenger and the like. |

You know what they say about the ratio of pictures to words....
One other question (for everyone reading) which has been asked before and perhaps not clearly and conclusively answered is :
When things are wired as above (and I believe that some Tomato firmware users also have said they hook it up like this), does that defeat the NAT Firewall part of the router, and if so for which of the computers ?
In contrast, if you instead wired things the regular way for a modem & router (WAN jack fed directly from the modem), and tell the router NOT to do a login, will it still work for the Windoze MLPPP (or maybe, but only with SOME models of equipment ?), and if yes, then what about the NAT Firewalling for this arrangement ?
Thanks |

| An added question...does this setup allow you to directly access the modem to obtain stats etc.?
I have seen the loop back from the WAN to LAN work this way on the forum. I had no success myself doing this
Thanks for the guide!! These same questions are asked so often.
Since TSI now supports MLPPP oficially maybe they should have a similar guide posted with ALL these answers |

Do NOT do this!
Ethernet from modem should go to WAN ! If you have WRT54GL and you put Tomato firmware on it, you can put the modem IP and you can access modem and have internet. |

But a true modem does not HAVE an internal IP of its own, right ?
Only those silly combo ones do, because they contain another router, or did I miss something along the way ?
But if I am correct about that, then do I tell a Tomato router anything about my old STH modem to allow Tomato to see the 'Net, or just hook things up the normal 'modem to router' way ? |

I am not quite up to date on all the specifics on the security of this type of connection. Only that if you hook up you router to the modem the traditional way and try to do a windows MLPPP you will get Error 651 no response form modem or other device.
I still use my router to do my main internet connection and only turn on the windows MLPPP connection when I want to DL something during throttling hours to avoid Bell. You can turn the created Windows Connection on and off in the system tray pretty fast and easy. Leaving only the routers PPPOE connection running to all the comps on the network only the comps who want to avoid throttle need MLPPP windows connection and only need to use it when needed.
As for avoiding the NAT with the wired arrangement, I see it no different then hooking a modem directly to a PC. May not be the most secure network set up for sure. But security is only as good as the things you need to keep safe and for most this is fine and the over secured network Geeks like us are the minority remember. Simpler is best for most and this is simple why I posted it. If you want to explain to average user how to firmware there routers feel free, I would recommend Tomato if you know how to do it properly. |

I have not tried any of this yet, only played with uTorrent versions and settings to try to beat throttling. - Sometimes helps.
And your 651 err msg is without Tomato ? - I wonder whether a Tomato user might comment whether they get a similar message with traditional (using WAN jack) hookup.
It also seems that a lot of this depends on what model modem is present and whether it is a combo one, and if so then how it is configured, such as bridged or with its OWN router enabled.
And your hookup is to a Dynamic IP account from provider ? |

| reply to Shada Yeah I was getting the error 651 with Linksys original firmware. Switched cables around and problem was gone.
I am using the Speedtouch 516 modem in Bridged mode.
And my account is Dynamic IP on the MLPPP realm
I use Utorrent aswell not the beta Copy just 1.8.1 the stable one. I also use Private trackers which before have had problems with certain set ups, and this MLPPP set up works fine for those sites aswell.
I mainly like how I can turn it off and on at will and still everyone else in house has internet like normal |

| Um...
To use multilink over a single line connection all you have to do is use the modem in bridged mode, set up your router to connect via pppoe with your new username/password...and create a connection in windows, pppoe, using the same username and password, set to only accept multilink sessions.
Thats it. You *probably* don't even need to activate that connection in windows.
This used to work all the time with TSI, until an error was discovered in the Juniper boxes, and it was disabled. I assume, from the diagram in the OP, that this has been reactivated, because there's nothing in that wiring that would suggest a change - all you're doing there is bypassing any hardware firewalling in the router. |

| The purpose of this kind of WAN loopback wiring setup is to be able to quickly create a MLPPP session within windows, when one desires to bypass throttling. Otherwise everything goes thru the router's NAT.
This is of course intended for people without Tomato capable routers. -- GOLF LEAFS GOLF! |

I've done it myself with 4 comps connected to my linksys...no need to upgrade to Tomato, no need to fiddle the wire. Just create a pppoe connection in windows, set it to multilink only, and go.
I'd test it now, but I don't have the new login, and probably won't since Utorrent is dealing fine for me. |

| reply to Shada Well you would think that it would work exactly like before but when I reset up to the traditional method you will Get an Error 651. which I never got before on the Previous Windows MLPPP long ago. something different maybe. But the cable swap I did fixes that problem.
And Like Hivolt said and I have mentioned many times now, this set up is for quick use of MLPPP for downloading then turn it off and your router nat and internet pppoe session will still always be connected for all other computers even yourself.
Like topic header says this is the EASY instructions for those who do not have tomato or not willing to try to flash their firmware, or for people who just want a nice easy no hassle way to enable and disable Windows MLPPP when it is needed only.
Yes there is more Secure Methods, Many other options and ways and configurations and settings and all the like. I have read the every post on this site over the past 2 years and have learned alot from you all. This is Just the EASY way for lets say Noobs or non geeks who just want it to work first time, and hey maybe even save a call or 2 to teksavvy. |

| reply to Shada From what I learned from the town hall meetings was that the message needs to be made less complicated for the general public. In my eyes so will the Solutions like mlppp. If it can be made really simple, that just doing what I did will get people around Bells throttling, then they may be quicker to adapt to our cause.
From my experience dealing with Tech comp issues, 80% of users will never touch or even know what firmware is. We want to get them to use it and open their eyes to life without bell. Most people even my grandma knows how to create or use a icon to login to the internet. When I switch older generation people over to highspeed their first question usually is where do I click to connect. So I figured Windows mlppp connection creation something they probably already understand more then the current network setup.
So if we keep it simple to start and get them on board and seeing actually what the difference is on their end with an easy set up like this to start, we win, and Teksavvy gets more business. Not just it current customers like us who switch over, but a whole new crop of people who will now hear and see what is possible and they will sign up with Teksavvy just for that. Once they join us and have it all going if they want to up their security or once they get more confident they want to add tomato or bonded lines, Fantastic.
So in summary do not frighten off the people by making the solution sound beyond their abilities just because you think flashing firmware and setting up IP's and the like is easy and everyone should be able to do it in their sleep or reading a guide. |

This setup will work with any router. I was under the impression one would spend money to buy a WRT54GL keep the linksys firmware on there. |
