Re: [XP] Wired vs Wireless, ping in games

Of course. Zoom is quite old now, no new firmware. I still think onboard nic is bad. Nothing too serious, ill get an ethernet card later to test.

What about the routers themselves? Since I am not familiar with those brands of routers, do you have the latest firmware on each router?

I tried 3 different cables which i believe 1 is very good, no trace of bending on those cables. No change.

Let me explain my configuration a little more.

I got 2 routers. Airties and Zoom x4(1st model). I set Zoom to handle internet and Airties router to act as a simple remote access. It's a long story why i set it up like this :P

Now i have 3 options for this computer.

1. Computer > Realtek Onboard NIC > Ethernet Cable > Airties > Zoom > Internet = Home LAN

2. Computer > Realtek Onboard NIC > Ethernet Cable > Zoom > Internet = Single Computer - NO LAN

3. Computer > Edimax USB Wireless Adapter (Atheros) > Airties > Zoom > Internet = Home LAN

Options 1 and 2 are almost identically same in WoW. About 160 ms latency at best.

Option 3 is the best with 80-100 ms.

All 3 options start with 70 ms when i just login to the game server. Then Options 1 and 2 climb their way to 160-280 range while option 3 stays around 100ms.

The remaining option is to get an external ethernet nic and prove the onboard nic sux

Another thing it could be is a bad cable too. I would swap the cable with another CAT5e cable and run another test. I would also do what jimbopalmer suggested and make sure all your network drivers are up to date.

I suspect bad ethernet drivers, but I suppose it could be one of your choices, You could drop in a PCI ethernet card for under $15 and find out.

If the wireless tests were with other computers, I suspect other software, either malware or P2P.

a. Windows XP
b. TTnet
c. ADSL
d. Connection always on
e. Airties R211 4 port+wireless
f. Modem is next to my computer and there are other computers connected (only)wireless.

The difference is visible in World of Warcraft.

Well, If I connect thru onboard Realtek ethernet on my MSI K9a2 Platinum mainboard, the ping very poor and you can see the lag between the time you press a button and see the response on screen.

If I connect thru wireless adapter, the ping is much lower and the responsiveness is imporoved.

Now, do you think the Airties router modem can't handle wireless and ethernet at the same time or my onboard ethernet chip is slow ?
