| lets say I bought some stock for $10.00. I expect it to go up and down today, and don't have time to watch it constantly throughout the day.
Is there a way to put a sell order in with an If statement.

1 edit | Re: [game] VSE Marketwatch Game 1 »www.sec.gov/answers/stopord.htm
A stop order is an order to buy or sell a stock once the price of the stock reaches a specified price, known as the stop price. When the specified price is reached, your stop order becomes a market order.
Buy Stop Order - Investors typically use a stop order when buying stock to limit a loss or protect a profit on short sales. The order is entered at a stop price that is always above the current market price.
Sell Stop Order - A sell stop order helps investors to avoid further losses or to protect a profit that exists if a stock price continues to drop. A stop order to sell is always placed below the current market price.
The advantage of a stop order is you don't have to monitor how a stock is performing on a daily basis. The disadvantage is that the stop price could be activated by a short-term fluctuation in a stock's price. Also, once your stop price is reached, your stop order becomes a market order and the price you receive may be much different from the stop price, especially in a fast-moving market where stock prices can change rapidly. An investor can avoid the risk of a stop order not guaranteeing a specific price by placing a stop-limit order. -- If the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, what is the road to Heaven paved with?

| Ok, since I can't play, here's what I did to make money like a madman. It takes a great, great deal of patience, but it works.
I'll break it down for simple terms. You don't need to be a stock market pro. You just have to have a good natural instinct.
The stock market is based largely upon reaction. At least, the part that I'm concerned about. Ever notice that when news breaks, stocks shoot up or down (even temporarily)? That's what you're looking for.
I use finance.yahoo.com. They have news articles and I just constantly hit refresh looking for an article that has really good or really bad news. Then I'll buy a stock, sit on it for maybe an hour or so and ride it up (or down), then sell it.
The key is to read the article within seconds of the press release, scan it for the right information, then purchase/short sell a stock and ride the "hype wave" for an hour or so and dump the stock.
You won't have the right instinct right away, which is what this test market is for. If you're not sure, read a press release that you think would have an impact on a stock and observe it. You can reset your portfolio here so taking risks isn't that bad. For the sake of this game, you could probably toss 25% of your current funds at a stock.
But that's all I do. Keep hitting refresh on the press releases, read the article as soon as it hits, and just get my bid in before the rest of the world gets a chance to read it, put their bids in. What might take them 15-20 minutes, takes me 1-3. I just hop on the train before everyone else does. -- 'A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.' -Thomas Jefferson -

| Re: [game] VSE Marketwatch Game 1 It's sold when the sell goes through.
In your scenario, you'd get it at the $10.12 price. This is how all stock purchases work, however, in this game, it has a 20 minute delay. Real stock trade sites operate usually at a minute or less. -- 'A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.' -Thomas Jefferson -

I sold it on the way up, rather than at the "peak". Recognizing that we can never really identify the peak to begin with.
