lets say I bought some stock for $10.00. I expect it to go up and down today, and don't have time to watch it constantly throughout the day.

Is there a way to put a sell order in with an If statement.

"If $10.25 then sell?"

if so, how do I do this?

Re: [game] VSE Marketwatch Game 1

A stop order is an order to buy or sell a stock once the price of the stock reaches a specified price, known as the stop price. When the specified price is reached, your stop order becomes a market order.

Buy Stop Order - Investors typically use a stop order when buying stock to limit a loss or protect a profit on short sales. The order is entered at a stop price that is always above the current market price.

Sell Stop Order - A sell stop order helps investors to avoid further losses or to protect a profit that exists if a stock price continues to drop. A stop order to sell is always placed below the current market price.

The advantage of a stop order is you don't have to monitor how a stock is performing on a daily basis. The disadvantage is that the stop price could be activated by a short-term fluctuation in a stock's price. Also, once your stop price is reached, your stop order becomes a market order and the price you receive may be much different from the stop price, especially in a fast-moving market where stock prices can change rapidly. An investor can avoid the risk of a stop order not guaranteeing a specific price by placing a stop-limit order.

let me see if I understand...

When I buy, I have to buy with a stop order... that will do what I am wanting?

The stock I bought through a market order, I have to manually sell when I want to?

Re: [game] VSE Marketwatch Game 1

You would want to place a stop-limit order on the stock you bought. It doesn't matter if it was a stop order or a market order:

If I wanted to do a stop-limit on a stock, it would look like this:

The stock would sell at $20.00 and would remain a valid order until the $20.00 mark is reached or until I cancel the order.

edit: I'll have to verify it, but I may have it wrong. You might have to put it in as a STOP instead of LIMIT..but the concept is there.

Stupid verbiage..

Re: [game] VSE Marketwatch Game 1

Yeah, it would be a stop on the upper end for selling and a high or low limit on buying..

I put in a test trade as a stop, I'll report back.

I have a stop sell order, but expiring at the end of the day. I will see if it works as well (if my stock goes up as high as I want it to).

Ok, since I can't play, here's what I did to make money like a madman. It takes a great, great deal of patience, but it works.

I'll break it down for simple terms. You don't need to be a stock market pro. You just have to have a good natural instinct.

The stock market is based largely upon reaction. At least, the part that I'm concerned about. Ever notice that when news breaks, stocks shoot up or down (even temporarily)? That's what you're looking for.

I use finance.yahoo.com. They have news articles and I just constantly hit refresh looking for an article that has really good or really bad news. Then I'll buy a stock, sit on it for maybe an hour or so and ride it up (or down), then sell it.

The key is to read the article within seconds of the press release, scan it for the right information, then purchase/short sell a stock and ride the "hype wave" for an hour or so and dump the stock.

You won't have the right instinct right away, which is what this test market is for. If you're not sure, read a press release that you think would have an impact on a stock and observe it. You can reset your portfolio here so taking risks isn't that bad. For the sake of this game, you could probably toss 25% of your current funds at a stock.

But that's all I do. Keep hitting refresh on the press releases, read the article as soon as it hits, and just get my bid in before the rest of the world gets a chance to read it, put their bids in. What might take them 15-20 minutes, takes me 1-3. I just hop on the train before everyone else does.

another n00b question:

if I put a sell order in, and it takes "up to 20 minutes to process," are the stocks sold at the time I put the order in or when it processes?

Re: [game] VSE Marketwatch Game 1

I realize that I misworded my question.

I buy stock at $10.00
It goes up to $10.25 - I hit sell
20 minutes later, the stock is at $10.12

are the stocks sold at the $10.25 or $10.12 price?

Re: [game] VSE Marketwatch Game 1

It's sold when the sell goes through.

In your scenario, you'd get it at the $10.12 price. This is how all stock purchases work, however, in this game, it has a 20 minute delay. Real stock trade sites operate usually at a minute or less.

Re: [game] VSE Marketwatch Game 1

The last game I did this, years back, it was my same problem as well.

I sold it on the way up, rather than at the "peak". Recognizing that we can never really identify the peak to begin with.

When doing day trading, be thankful you netted positive, rather than getting frustrated that you didn't get the full peak.

Ok, so I bought 100 shares of a company, and just did the, buy, 100, day order, market.

Now if I want to sell it ONLY at a certain price, what do I do?

I don't know about that. I haven't used the site in forever. I never went by prices anyways. My strategy was always in-and-out.

The site is blocked for me here at work, so I'm only able to participate in spirit

You would place a sell limit order good for "today" only or "good until canceled" with the upper limit being what you want to sell at.

It works both ways. you buy at 10.00, it rises to 10.25 when you put the sell order in. 20 minutes later when your order goes thru the price went up to 11.00.

you win some and you lose some.

the stock markets suck.

i knew RIM would finish strong, which is why i bought a bunch of their stock, but their shares have continued to slide...that makes no sense...their numbers came out and revenues are up 58%, strong profits, etc...there is NO reason their shares should be dropping right now.

Re: [game] VSE Marketwatch Game 1

What happened was that the stock prices went up based upon the anticipated results, which were amazing, but less amazing than speculated, so now the stock prices need to readjust.
