i always lose money in these games...for some reason, i always miss the dips and end up buying right when stuff starts to dip...even the good stuff is going down. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

| reply to manfmmd Ok, since I can't play, here's what I did to make money like a madman. It takes a great, great deal of patience, but it works.
I'll break it down for simple terms. You don't need to be a stock market pro. You just have to have a good natural instinct.
The stock market is based largely upon reaction. At least, the part that I'm concerned about. Ever notice that when news breaks, stocks shoot up or down (even temporarily)? That's what you're looking for.
I use finance.yahoo.com. They have news articles and I just constantly hit refresh looking for an article that has really good or really bad news. Then I'll buy a stock, sit on it for maybe an hour or so and ride it up (or down), then sell it.
The key is to read the article within seconds of the press release, scan it for the right information, then purchase/short sell a stock and ride the "hype wave" for an hour or so and dump the stock.
You won't have the right instinct right away, which is what this test market is for. If you're not sure, read a press release that you think would have an impact on a stock and observe it. You can reset your portfolio here so taking risks isn't that bad. For the sake of this game, you could probably toss 25% of your current funds at a stock.
But that's all I do. Keep hitting refresh on the press releases, read the article as soon as it hits, and just get my bid in before the rest of the world gets a chance to read it, put their bids in. What might take them 15-20 minutes, takes me 1-3. I just hop on the train before everyone else does. -- 'A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.' -Thomas Jefferson -

if I put a sell order in, and it takes "up to 20 minutes to process," are the stocks sold at the time I put the order in or when it processes? -- DSLr Mafia Member. |

| I realize that I misworded my question.
I buy stock at $10.00 It goes up to $10.25 - I hit sell 20 minutes later, the stock is at $10.12
are the stocks sold at the $10.25 or $10.12 price? -- DSLr Mafia Member. |

| It's sold when the sell goes through.
In your scenario, you'd get it at the $10.12 price. This is how all stock purchases work, however, in this game, it has a 20 minute delay. Real stock trade sites operate usually at a minute or less. -- 'A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.' -Thomas Jefferson -

| The last game I did this, years back, it was my same problem as well.
I sold it on the way up, rather than at the "peak". Recognizing that we can never really identify the peak to begin with.

| I don't know about that. I haven't used the site in forever. I never went by prices anyways. My strategy was always in-and-out.
