Doctor Olds : Glad I was able to help you with your DSL and hopefully getting it into the stable zone for you. :D

I don't know what to suggest to you about their much more expensive "Dedicated Internet or Ethernet" as I can't spend that money for you by saying yes (if you follow me ;)). I'd personally try to load balance the current DSL first to see if it is acceptable or not and see how that goes for a month or two. Then check with whoever pays the bills to see if there is enough potential increase in productivity to warrant the greater monthly costs for the better upload speeds of the higher "Dedicated Internet or Ethernet" line.

I wish I could be of more help, but I don't know the budget and the actual bandwidth requirements that you would need.

Regards,

Doctor Olds
--
What’s the point of owning a supercar if you can’t scare yourself stupid from time to time?

Prism : Had a long talk with the Windstream billing and tech. They confirmed everything Doctor Olds has written in reply. The technician actually found ne to be knowledgeable, which I explained is only because of the excellent education I received on this forum!

On our second dynamic DSL, they determined it was only ever provisioned for 3.0 mbps, despite the 12mbps billing, Windstream adjusted the bill back to day one without prompting which I thought was good customer service. Thumbs up for Windstream. The tech was able to boost the SNR to a range of 11-14.5 from 8 by changing it to ADSL2+.

The static line which I posted details about was already on the ADSL2+, so the only solution is to throttle the speed as advised. We will first try the 3.0 mbps and leave the 768 kbps upload and check for stability, then if needed drop the upload as well.

He also recommended an upgrade they now offer called Dedicated Internet or Ethernet, which he explained is T1 lines bound together, which provides a symmetrical 3 mbps down and up, with upgrades in speed for about $500 per 3.00 mbps improvement. He said these are proving very popular and are very stable. He also mentioned that the stable signal gives good speed despite the slower rated dsl because it is so stable and despite the distance can support higher speeds. What would you advise on this?

Also, is there a way for us to monitor our upload usage to determine if the connections we use actually strain the present pipeline? We don’t upload large files, but in normal use we would have 4 to 8 data feeds for financial charting on various PCs, to which we send requests to say change from IBM stock quotes to DELL, and a similar number of connections to brokers to whom we submit orders directly to their servers using APIs which are mostly Java based.

Big thumbs up to Doctor Olds and this forum! :)

Prism : I see, mapquest gives a distance of 1.9mi to where I beleive the tel co is located. That looks about right eyeballing the chart

I'll be calling Windstream tomorow to get an accurate distance to the switch and ask that the speed be throttled to match the line attenuation.

Interestingly we just discovered a similar issue with our electric supply that was causing some PCs to shut down. Came down to voltage drop due to the load, the guage wire and the distance to the panel in the electrical room.

I'll report back, looks like we will need a third dsl and load balance if we need more speed.

This post has been very educational.

Best modem for Windstream DSL - problems with SS 4200

Prism : Hello,

We use Windstream DSL with two lines, one static and one dynamic. Service was good in our prior office but since moving a few miles away, and also at my home location, I have been experiencing frequent disconects.

We use the Speadstream 4200 which is the only modem they support now, previously we used the SS5200 which seemed to work better.

What happens are two possible different problems.

1. The DSL link is dropped several times a day and have to wait for reconnection. When this happens we get the modem setup page

2. When clicking on a link from within a browser, we will instead get the modem setup page, yet the modem is still connected and closing the browser or opening another browser it is possible to then go to the link.

My primary question is this: is there a better modem than the 4200 which will work with Windstream and give us better service?

Also, do other windstream users have this same problem?

Greatly appreciate any help or comments.

Cheers/
