| [Speed] Poaching free speed: wishful thinkg?
I have the Comcast 20 mbps tier, called "Blast" where I live. With a Motorola SB5120 I got 21 mbps constantly. In other words, I got exactly what I paid for, no complaints whatsoever. I just now installed a Motorola SB6120. I was under the impression, for no good reason at all, that one could get extra, "free" speed above the advertised tier speeds, simply as a result of using the DOCSIS 3.0 modem. However, I get the exact same speeds with the SB6120 that I got with the SB5120. Am I missing anything, or is it just flat wrong to think that extra speed comes from using the SB6120 alone? |

| I can't find the thread with espaeth 's explanation, but having a newer modem can sometimes mean the difference between sharing a crowded single downstream frequency or using bonding to spread things across lesser loaded frequencies.
What it ultimately could mean for you is the difference between getting powerboost 24/7 and only getting powerboost at 3am when the overall utilization is lower.
I'm not familiar with those particular modems but I think in your case the above could be true. Even if you don't get powerboost with the plan you're on, it's possiblely still going to mean more consistent throughput throughout the day, again due to the channel bonding. Then again, if your particular area isn't very prone to congestion, it's not buying you anything (for now). -- He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have. -Socrates |

| reply to poacher The modem(s) are all going to give you the speed you are subscribed to and no more. PowerBoost may be higher with several bonded channels, but the sustained speeds will still be what you are subscribed to - no more.
12mbps service will still be 12mbps. 16 will still be 16.
Don't know where you got that information but it's wrong. Sorry! -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

| reply to poacher the speed tier is controlled by a boot file that the modem is given by the CMTS in your area. The billing codes on your account control what boot file CMTS gives your modem, that is how Comcast controls your speed tier and your access through thier network. The 3.0 modem uses dual channels but with out the billing coding added to your account, you wont get any more speed than what you pay for. |

All true, but if someone's area is congested and they don't get 16 mbps 24/7, it could potentially help. -- He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have. -Socrates |

1 edit | Sure! So could merely cloning the computer's MAC to the router and getting a different IP with different routing.
Just getting a 6120 on Perf or Blast won't get "free speed". -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

If the OP was getting 21Mbps constantly with a SB5120, and is likely on 16/2 +PB, (that's the way I read "Blast" as a tier name) it sounds like congestion was not a problem anyway, at least not so far. The 6120 was probably unneeded, but doesn't hurt. |

What colors are the indicator lights ?
Are you in an area that has indeed been upgraded to D3 ? |

@comcast.net | reply to poacher Thank you for your helpful responses. FWIW, Comcast "Blast" in the San Francisco area is "up to 20 mbps with Power Boost." |

| reply to EG said by EG :Question:Can you post the modems stats so that we may see if, and how many downstream channels are being bonded ? Answer: 3 appear to be available. I don't know how to find out how many are actually bonded. Question: What colors are the indicator lights ? Answer: Receiver is blue (that is, bonded) and send is green. Question: Are you in an area that has indeed been upgraded to D3 ? Answer: Yes indeed. San Franciscans would riot if they didn't have the latest and greatest. |
