What Wireless carriers are doing is no different then old Bell System model coupling service delivery with equipment.
We need notion of Common Carriage, some companies provide connectivity, others hardware, and still others applications and content.

00000 | No it's not because Ma Bell was the only game in town. They were a monopoly in voice telecom.
Cellular is anything but a monopoly. If you don't like AT&T you are free to go to any other carrier you want to buy a different phone. Don't like Sprint, you are free to go to any other carrier and buy something other than the Pre.
