Wisp While gaming

No Cable and very few DSL ISP's are available in my area. I got this crappy EVDO with a 5 GB cap. We are ditching the EVDO and looking into a type of wireless.

They install a "radio" outside of our house. Runs through the house via ethernet cable. The speeds are:

$50.00 1MB down/256 up.

$65.00 3 MB/1MB

$90.00 7MB/3MB

We are looking at the $65 one. Here's where I need confirmation. We play Xbox competitively (for cash). How well are the ping times on a WISP? The owner answered my Email and said his internet is top notch in the US, he was pinging 50ms to yahoo. Which is what another forum member reported, around 50ms (6 years ago)

I can't deal with ping times over 70ms, as our currently stands at 150 to Chicago.

Thanks for any input.

Re: Wisp While gaming

There are so many variables that determine how well you will be able to game, but that could be said for any wireline carrier as well. A properly managed network though should function the same as a wireline system.

This should be moved to the wisp users forum for continued discussion though.

"We play Xbox competitively (for cash)."

If your connection is that mission critical you should be looking for an enterprise circuit.

out there
I don't know of any way to determine what the ping times are likely to be on any particular network without using it.
A WISP's network could have quite good ping times 1) most of the time, 2) some of the time or 3) seldom.

Your wisp or any proider could be 50 mz or less but outside thier network they have NO control. We run into this issue as a wisp as well people gaming sayign they NEED lots of bandwidth when in reality gaming uses a little more if not less then a typical dialup connection. Like you said its the latency that kills it. We run 40-50 out to the net but some game servers we hit at over 100ms which is not our issue and we have NO control over.

It could be the pipe serving the hosted server, it could be anythign in between so you cant go blaming your ISP who no matter who it is unless you can say without a doubt that the spike in pings is inside thier network..

Dont get me wrong we want everyone to enjoy thier experience and we like for gamers to have fun but you have to understand the network..

As they stated a "well managed" network is just as good as cable/dsl.

MaggzZ -

You should let us know what kind of equipment they are installing for you. Also ask what frequency they use.

I can tell you this, a WISP *can* be good but due to the nature of wireless variable latency is quite common.

When the installer comes this is what *I* would personally ask (as a fellow gamer, however PC owns console newbs just FWIW ) - which they may or may not choose to answer:

1. What brands/types/frequency of customer equipment do they support/use (ie Canopy, Ubiquity... 2.4Ghz, 5.8ghz, etc)

2. How far away is their tower and what gear do they use for backhaul.

3. How many customers share your tower in particular now and what is their projected loading? (ie how new is it?)

4. What is their Internet backbone connection, and do they do any traffic shaping or prioritization?

The above would tell a wireless network guy what to expect pretty much...

Well the tower is like 5 miles away. We also live on a hill, so that helps. I can't really answer the other Q's just yet though. I will take pics after the install. How its ran into the house, where its mounted on the house and such.

I tried to post anonymously a minute ago...

What is the name of the WISP you are using? I live in Indiana and got a flyer in the mail from "Heavenwire" today. I'm currently using Hughesnet and the dl caps and latency are killing me.

It doesnt really depend on your connection, it depends on the hosts connection. If the host is in mexico with a bad connection then it will be laggy. If someone is using a t1 to host then it will feel like your playing on a lan.

^Not true at all.

While T1 will normally have a more steady ping, you still can't avoid the extra latency from distance, internet congestion, etc. Lets say someone has a T1 in New York, they're the host, someone connecting in Mexico(as you stated above), you will most likely have atleast a 60ms ping. Do that across the ocean, and you'll hit 150ms easily.

LAN connection is 0-2ms. Most of the time 0-1, but I have had 2ms before. I read/heard from somewhere, it takes around 16ms to just hit the internet backbone from a T1 connection.

That's a 900mhz antenna. Is the radio shooting through trees? Odd that they used that, unless they don't have a 5.7ghz access point or you live in sherwood forest.

It should be fine for what you're doing - and definitely better than your alternatives.

Nice! But....

Here are a few things to consider:

Did they install any surge protection on the cable that runs inside?

Zip ties onto that conduit are lazy.

I am a picky person. I pull spot checks on the installer randomly to make sure he is performing installations that are as close to the "Bell" way of doing things. Workmanship and safety are #1.
