Rushed for time or not, I'd think the first thing they'd teach you in training is not to drill into a power line (or water or sewer line). :)

Both explosions happened as the result of an install. The tech was sleeping on the job. The murder happended during a repair call. Your example really had nothing to do directly with Comcast other then he was employed there. It wasn't as if he kidnapped the 17 year old while on a service call.

According to Tracy police, Schumacher is a contractor with Comcast Cable. Four children living in the home were taken into custody by San Joaquin County Child Protective Services.

An emaciated teen, stumbled into a gym Monday afternoon wearing nothing but a heavy chain padlocked to his ankle and a pair of oversized boxers. The bruised, cut boy remains in serious condition at a Tracy hospital.

When the teenager wandered into the In-Shape Sports Club about 3:30 p.m. Monday, he was barefoot, wearing only flesh-colored boxers. He had cuts and burns on his back and was described as emaciated and covered in soot, dried blood, feces and urine, police said.

That's possible. Neither source would be considered real unbiased. But try finding news from anywhere about any cableco, telco, or satco that has caused major damange. I think you'll find the same as what gets reported here.

en102 posted : Yup - I remember having TWC installers come in and wire up my TV. They put 2 splitters in series (1 for the main, and then a second for the TV/Cable modem). TWC came and replaced the splitters with proper ones (one with a -3dB drop vs -7 to connect to the 2nd one, and a different splitter for the cablemodem).

Second set of guys came (on a weekend no less), and installed a drop-amp (dang!) - these were actual TWC employees.

The third guy (been with TWC for a LONG time), got rid of the drop amp, replaced the bad splitters and most of my isseus were fixed.

I doubt it. Anytime Comcast/AT&T or TWC etc screw something up spectacularly it makes news here :D

However, Comcast does seem a tad better at making the news more often. :D

OH And this site has ALSO reported when Techs etc have done some heroic things (saving ppl from fires, etc)

Of all the install nightmares that I've seen reported here over the years, Comcast by far seems to be the worst. There have been explosions, napping on the job, another explosion, and even double murder. While all the instances were contractors and not direct employees of Comcast, they all are entities that are responsible to Comcast. Many other companies use contractors to service their customers, and you don't see numerous issues reported with them here.

To tell you the truth, I can't remember seeing TWO issues with the same company where property was destroyed to the degree that Comcast contractors have been reported on. Coincidence? Or corporate culture?

Or maybe just selective reporting by the Consumerist and BBR.

What's strange is that Comcast sends out contractors for any job that actually requires more work than simply changing a splitter.

Either Comcast's own employees are incapable of doing this type of work or Comcast is hiring day laborers as contractors.

Some kid that doesn't know to look before drilling... seen it in plumbing, electrical, and yes, internet installs.

Perhaps lowest bidder isn't such a great idea...
