Rob A : It's ancient, and was only decent in it's time, nothing special at all. When it was new, the Walkman Circ was nothing more than an entry level, very basic walkman.

Check out sony's latest walkman, the X, S, and E series are all very impressive. If you are looking for something small and cheap, you can probably still pick up a NW-E005 for under $30, I picked one up a few months ago for $30 shipped off ebay. Plus it's 2GB and way better than the Circ, still not new (was released in 2006 or 2007), but a much better walkman if you are looking for something cheap to get the job done.

Edit - Feel free to ask me any questions. I've owned several walkman over the passed few years from MiniDisc, to HDD, to Flash. I'm currently in love with my NWZ-X1051. For people that really appreciate great sound quality, look no further than Sony.
--
Spread Opera!
Sarah : Yeah, I've got Rockbox running on my trusty old iRiver H140. It certainly has saved that player from the trash heap for several years now :) I sent them a couple of donations over the years... they do amazing stuff. And it certainly makes me reassured that if the market goes even further downhill that I'll be able to use it on an old iPod and still have a decent player.

As for the state of the market... I'm disappointed that there are not more players aimed at audiophiles and high-end consumers. Where are the optical and line-out jacks for people who want to use headphone amps? Where is the format support? How about decent EQ or just a higher-quality headphone jack? Where is lossless recording capability? My Rockboxed H140 has all that, which is in part why I keep it, but no one makes anything like that anymore.

There are a few companies, mainly in Asia, making higher end stuff (like the Cowon S9 that I have) but even those are somewhat lacking. It seems the market has gone from being aimed at audio geeks to being aimed at teenagers to being aimed at people who want either a PDA or a phone. I have zero interest in apps and wifi and all that stuff if a player is not going to play my music perfectly, y'know? :)
--
Join the DSLR Kiva team!

I'm perfectly happy running my Rockboxed Sansa e270 v1
Id be interested in running a Sansa Clip or e200seriesv2 as long as the Rockbox developers have reliable builds for the platform.

If I had my druthers, I'd like to try running Rockbox on an iPod 5th Geneneration iPod video - it works with Rockbox and supports a large hard drive that can be upagraded to 160GB plusl

Rockbox is without a doubt the best firmware you can run on any PMP, it allows for the use of more codexes and a feature set that includes audio equalizations and incrediable flexibility in creating playlists and every other fuction of the player.

Sarah : Eh... are you assuming that the Zune is the second most popular mp3 player? I doubt that's true. Last I heard Sansa was outselling them about 3:1.

Just because you only know about mp3 players you've seen on TV commercials doesn't mean there aren't any others ;) In addition to Sansa's budget players, Cowon, Sony, and Samsung have some very solid high-end players out right now, and Creative just announced one with some extremely impressive specs (32GB + SDHC, X-Fi, bluetooth, GPS, wifi, HD camera, built-in speaker and mic, HDTV out...and an open-source OS).

I just can't imagine recommending an $80 4GB screenless player (Apple's cheapest one) to someone looking for something inexpensive. It's so overpriced, unless you have a burning need to either use iTunes or lighten your load by 3/4 of an ounce.
--
Join the DSLR Kiva team!
