| Verifying QWest DSL speed before signing up? I'm using Comcast but am sick of the problems and bs. QWest claims that they can deliver 7mb DSL at my location...which is much faster than they previously stated.
Before I sign up I would like to get a tech out here and show me the connection speed. Anyone done that or have any suggestions on how to verify before I switch? | |

| Re: Verifying QWest DSL speed before signing up? I seriously doubt that would happen. They'd have to go through the trouble of provisioning your port and wiring your line to the DSLAM just to get you to train at the right rate.
Your best bet is to order DSL, but not to cancel your current service until you're satisfied that DSL will suit your needs. You should be able to cancel within the first month without penalty if you're not satisfied with the service:
The early-termination charge associated with the 2-year term commitment will be waived if: (A) you notify Qwest within 30 days of the date you ordered the service with a term commitment that you do not agree to the terms of this agreement and terminate your service and (B) Qwest has not performed and you have not used any of that service. Qwest may waive the early-termination charge if you move or upgrade service; your original term commitment period may start over. | |

So you may end up paying for 7Mb service and only see 2Mb speeds. check with some neighbors to see what their speeds actually are and go for a speed package close to what they see. Better to save the $20-50 per month. | |

As mentioned, the price is the same for 3M, 5M and 7M, but if someone isn't getting close to what they've signed up for, they'll try to fix problem causing it. | |

| I've emailed QWest 2x so far asking for information on how I can get confirmation of their ability to deliver something near 7mb (2mb isn't close enough). No response yet.
I expect they will just say I can cancel in 30 days if I don't like it. Of course that means that I would need to keep (and pay for) both cable and dsl.
Maybe it's worth a call to Comcast and explain what I'm contemplating to see if they will cut my internet bill ($54 currently).
I just ran speedtest.net using a local access pt. My down speed came back at 20.38 and my up speed shows 6.18. | |

I believe Comcast prorates your bill when you start and end service. A couple days won't hurt. If the DSL does what you want, just drop off the cable modem at the Comcast office the next day. If it doesn't, return the DSL modem and get a refund. | |

| In our area they are advertising and selling 3 speeds: 1.5mb for $14.95; 7mb for $25 and 20mb for $45. I spoke with a CS person and they said the 1.5 and 7 were available to me. the 7 (or something in that range) would work fine and the price is less than 1/2 Comcast (for the first 12 months) and then still $18 less than Comcast after 12 months.
From a price standpoint it's interesting. | |

| Re: Verifying QWest DSL speed before signing up? If the online qualification tool indicates you qualify for 7M, then that's what you should be able to get. If you could only qualify for 3 or 5M, then that's what the qual tool would indicate.
For example, I am to far from the CO for 7M, and the online tool tells me that I only qualify for 256k, 1.5M and 3M. I pay the 3-5-7 meg price for 3M. But as it's rock solid, and cable tops out at 1.5m here, it's a no-brainer for me. | |

Qwest's online tool has been a joke of late. I am getting 1.5 service. I check every once in awhile to see if anything faster is available. Over the past month, the online tool has told me that 7mb is available, that only 1.5mb is available, and that nothing is available. Just this morning, it told me that neither my phone number nor address were within Qwest's 14 state service area. If you call and speak with a CSR, you should be able to get more accurate information (they appear to use some different tool). However, the only way you are going to get perfect info is to actually install. | |

| I just had 20MBit service installed at my house today. The actual negotiated connection speed is somewhere between 20,500 and 21,000 (I cannot recall the actual # at the moment). I also have 20MBit service at my office. It's showing 19,002 at the current moment.
Either way, both locations now have very fast, very reliable Internet access.  | |

I just had Comcast out again today on my cable internet due to massive speed issues (either connection/routing or DNS server). I'm going to run both connections for 30 days (switching between them) to see how they compare. If QWest can get within reasonable distance of their 7mb claim I'll drop CC. | |
