[Help] ADSL problems in Italy

I've been having some strange (and frustrating) symptoms with my adsl lately and am desperate for help. I've already had 2 calls to ISP which is Telecom Italia, and they do something on their end, i.e. "reset", and it works again for hours or days, whatever the case may be, and then goes bad again.
Here's what I've got:
Windows XP sp2 pc connected by ethernet cable to ISP provided modem made by Pirelli, no router.
Symptoms:
Internet connection slows to a crawl or stops altogether for days on end. I can get pages to load sometimes if I refresh several times. The "ADSL" light on modem stays on all the time, no problems there, but the "Internet" light goes out and won't come back on until I power cycle the modem. Sometimes I am able to still load web pages when the "internet" light is out!??? Also, under Network Connections, my broadband PPPoE connection is constantly disconnecting and I am having to connect it myself, but again, often it will say "disconnected" and I can still surf the web.
I've run virus scans multiple times, anti spyware scans, etc., but don't think that's the problem anyway since I have same connectivity issues on laptop connected to wi-fi.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I am at my wits end here.
