MLPPP: Update & feedback request

Heya folks.

So, the latest news is that I have a final patch from Juniper. The new equipment for the second E320 is on order but no ETA yet.

The plan is to get the second E320 online and take some ERX310's out of production and redeploy them, with the latest patch from Juniper, as the final dedicate MLPPP hardware. I will see if it's possible to have a redundant setup where if one fails everything would not be offline. No promises though.

Other factors are that we are still getting the Switch & Data suite at 151 Front ready and all of the above will be contingent on having it online and working properly. This means an other large maintenance where downtime should be minimal again though.

So.... with all of this said. There's another side of things that I/we could really use some help from all of you and that's with the support for all this stuff.

The reality is that we cant support all flavors of all systems so we do need to restrict what we're able to support. If we had a central location where there was a master MLPPP FAQ that had all the various ways of setting up MLPPP nicely itemized so our own staff could use/reference as well as just anybody could use, that would go a long way to helping us. Is there anybody who could take this on? maybe a few people? To some extent it's all be written in this forum so it may be as simple as collecting it all in one place? thoughts?

Angelo,

Can we split it up into: Basic and Advanced

I think that it's a bit much for average users...

Re: MLPPP: Update & feedback request

so one of the big ones would be the various ways to set up Tomato properly and which routers will support it too ?

the guide on fixppp.org is ok, but i think there was some better threads in here with simpler instructions that could be used ...

I'm thinking we'll hear from them as soon as they check out this thread.

We're setting up a web site for this right now. Gabe will cook something up shortly.

Re: MLPPP: Update

Windows MLPPP: Probably the simplest to set up, but it's single-link so you may not want to support it. Technically raspppoe lets you do multi-link, but that's really not recommended.

Tomato/MLPPP: Relatively simple to set up (complexity pretty much the same as setting up any broadband router, plus the flashing-new-firmware bit), probably the most popular connection method, should be supported.

Zeroshell/MLPPP: Far more flexible/powerful, but somewhat early in the development stage. Targeted at businesses more than consumers. Kind of buggy in our dogfooding, although Insomniakk has had great stability that we've ironically been unable to reproduce. Actually fairly straightforward to set up (most of the difficulty in the Virtualbox instructions came from Virtualbox), but does involve some SSH interaction to install the patch. Probably hold off on supporting until it stabilizes a bit.

Linux/MLPPP: Same base code as ZeroShell/MLPPP (which is sort of like Linux/MLPPP integrated with ZeroShell), this is for people who want multi-line MLPPP on their own Linux box. Doesn't get much testing, although DSL_Ricer uses it as his primary setup. May want to support if ZeroShell/MLPPP gets support, but I'm not sure how many people are really using it...

Microtik: Reported to be a non-complete implementation, probably shouldn't support

Cisco: Probably the most complicated setup, but some people have expressed interest in MLPPP on Cisco hardware. Probably should support unless the degree of complexity is too high.

pFsense/BSD: AFAIK, never worked properly at all (big latency issues)

Random Linux distro: Possible, but shouldn't bother supporting

I think that's all of them? Am I missing any other MLPPP-capable setups?

Unless OSX suddenly supports MLPPP you can ignore it for now

it's a good start.

so I guess we need how-to's for each one now.

once we see how those look we should be able to see fairly easily which ones could be considered "basic" and which ones are "advanced" as well as some "best practices" such as making sure you have your firewall enabled if you use the windows multi-link for single link option.

Re: MLPPP: Update & feedback request

I like the complicated setups for the geeks among us, I've downloaded the handbook and I'm keeping it...

You should probably have organic changelogs, with the simple guide being on HTML and the complex one available for download.

Re: MLPPP: Update

If you want a really "basic" option, you could sell or rent a startup kit that includes a DSL modem (or 2) pre-configured and a router with Tomato flashed and pre-configured.

It depends on how widely you want MLPPP adopted though. Requiring it to be DIY automatically excludes a lot of people.

yep.. I'm kind of trying to do both... basic for average/savvy users. and those advanced users who are fairly hardcore and want all the details.

Re: MLPPP: Update & feedback request

To clarify, I think Simple one, should be HTML only.

The complex one should probably available for download first off, with the simple instructions in the first pages.

Re: MLPPP: Update

As a word of caution, Tomato isn't entirely opensourced. Most of the base Linksys firmware is (some exceptions like Broadcom drivers), Tomato/MLPPP is, and most of Tomato is. Some parts of Tomato, though, primarily the UI, are not opensource in that they have the following license:

/*
Tomato GUI
Copyright (C) 2006-2008 Jonathan Zarate
»www.polarcloud.com/tomato/

For use with Tomato Firmware only.
No part of this file may be used without permission.
*/

This is why I got permission from him for the design of fixppp.org; even though I coded it from the ground up, my CSS code was heavily influenced to the point where you could probably consider it a derivative work. The author said it was fine.

Modifying the UI as we do in Tomato/MLPPP is probably not against the license since we're not so much "using" it as modifying it, and the author doesn't seem to mind such tweaks (that's not the intent of his restrictions).

Rebranding the firmware, though, might require Jonathan Zarate's permission.

Um, there aren't any plans to re-brand anything other then our own website with some FAQ and HOWTO's... whatever Tomato and anything else... that's all fine and dandy...
