But, it says his previous balance was $57.66. His next bill will be $50.79.

Look at it carefully. The previous balance was NEGATIVE. So they had a credit balance. Otherwise how could 73 + 30 + 5 be 50?
Ahh ok that makes sense, thanks for clarifying that.
