I have had a DS Lite for a long time now with no screen protectors. Since the device stays closed when not in use it has no scratches on it.
Just make sure the kids always use a proper style not a ballpoint pen and make sure the kids don't press on the touchscreen too hard. Mine is used regularly by a 13 year old, I barely use it myself. -- DO DO
