| [Vista] 0x80004005 Service Pack 2 Installation Error I keep getting E_FAIL(0x80004005) as an installation error code when trying to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2.
It gets all the way to Stage 3 of 3 100% and then it starts to revert the operating system to the pre-SP2 installation state.
I have attached some log files from the CBS folder in the Windows Log folder. Yeah, they are large so I had to ZIP them.
Any ideas on what is going wrong? -- Tom |

| I had one machine out of 50 or so at work that did the same. I never was able to resolve it, had to just clean install. This machine never had "other drives" or disk management software, so that article wasn't much help for me, unfortunately. -- "Don't steal. The government hates competition." Beyond AM. Beyond FM. | reply to trparky I had that problem with SP1. I have not yet tried SP2.
For SP1, it turned out to be because I am running linux on a multi-boot system. The linux "/boot" partition was marked active. Apparenty the SP install can get confused if the active partition is not the one from which Vista boots. Solution: Mark the Vista partition active; install SP1; then mark the linux boot partition active (I did the latter with a linux rescue CD).
I have no idea whether your problem is similar or completely different. -- AT&T dsl; Westell 327w modem/router; openSuSE 11.0; firefox 3.0.11 |

| It wasn't my machine, it was my uncle's machine that I was working on.
I've already restored the computer using the HP hidden recovery partition.
It was infected before but I went through all of the necessary cleanup measures so who really knows what caused it. It was having issues installing other Windows Updates so again, who knows. -- Tom |

 | reply to trparky I have the same problem. As far I as I am concern many people have reported this issue. I have hidden Lenovo partition and I did restore my system from an image backup in the past due to hard disk failure. However, I do not see errors in my CBS.log as reported in »support.microsoft.com/kb/971204 . So far I could not find any simple solution. |

AnClarPremium join:2003-07-31 Belton, TX | reply to trparky I've had the same problem on a Dell XPS 600. This box had a clean install of a non-Dell full retail copy of Vista with SP1 incorporated.
I'm at current patch level, and the system is working just fine at SP1. I tried multiple times, with the help of MS tech support to fix this with no luck. Same problem...SP2 install fails at 100% of stage 3 with an E_FAIL error. Nothing helped, and even a repair attempt by an in-place upgrade using the MS Vista DVD bombed out (blue screen). I'm not going to use the nuclear option on this machine and do a clean reinstall...it just ain't worth it...I'm just gonna stay at SP1. My guess is that there is something flaky in this Dell h/w that the service pack doesn't like.
If anyone comes up with a workable fix I may try again but for now....oh well...another MS no work deal. -- When in danger or in doubt run in circles, scream and shout! |

 | reply to trparky I have had this problem for 3 tries . I tried 3 times and all three time installation fails at step 3 100% with the same error code . However , I also have an OpenSuse partition and I think its boot loader that is active .
I'll try to remove it completely and install a fresh Vista . |
|
 | You don't need to remove linux, just mark the windows partition active, then install SP2. Once complete then mark the linux partition active again.
i had the same issue with OpenSolaris and Windows 2008 |
