Re: Cartoon HD coming July 1 to all Analog Crush Markets :

i am certainly not complaining and am thankful for the new HD channels for sure...i just would rather see stations such as MTV or VH1 or comedy central or other stations before cartoons....again ,i am not complaining just making a comment and asking a question

Re: Cartoon HD coming July 1 to all Analog Crush Markets :

MTV, VH1, Comedy Central have very very few HD programs at this time so having an HD channel would be a waste...unless you're a huge fan of The Real World, which I believe is the only program to be filmed in HD on MTV...Comedy Central only has maybe 2 HD programs at the moment (Daily Show + Colbert?)

I'd rather have HD channels with some real HD content on them...otherwise it will look the same as the standard channel or upconverted shows...look at G4 HD and E! HD...barely any HD content on them

I must say, the whole "In all analog crushed markets" saying bothers me. Because we're the only market who has analog channel serviced areas. So when i see "New HD channel" I instantly get excited until I continue on and realize we're not a part of the excitment. I guess I should be used to that by now, yet I've always held hope that RCN would get their act together.

Money doesn't grow on trees. If it does, let me know where I can find some. The Crush project would cost tons of money. I'm sure that is why RCN hasn't done it yet in the Allentown area. Allentown is not as densly populated as the other markets it serves, and I would assume cost much more to implement.

That's fine. I understand that. But why should we be paying the same amount as those areas that do get all the benefits of the analog crush, mainly being many more HD programs. Further more, RCN has already chosen to block all HD channels that were in the clear for the last two years. So those of us who have HD sets with QAM tuners, can no longer take advantage of that. If they are not going to cut us a price break, then at least unblock those channels HD channels we had before. I find RCN marketing funny. They advertise "free HD", but you must rent their HD STB at $11.95 a month to get those "free" HD channels. As someone else said on here. That's like advertising free food, but you need to buy the utensils to eat it.

I did a Google search a while back looking for info on the L. V. and the analog crush. I stumbled across an article that showed, if my memory serves correctly, that RCN had reduced it's costs approximately $7 million dollars in the first 1/4 of 2009, mostly because of the analog crush in the major markets according to the article. (I'll try to find same article again and post as an edit)

So yes there was initial cost to implement the crush but it was a great savings for RCN as well.

Edit: here is the article

Wow, so you mean to tell me you're not insulted with the fact that they're not even PLANNING on crushing our market? Especially since we were the FIRST market RCN owned and operated?? C'mon, what you just said is silly. The Lehigh Valley two way customers should be getting the same amount of HD channels as the other markets. I'm sure there's a way to do it even allowing one way connections to pass through the same line. So we'd probably have 20 less HD channels... that's better than being 70 less like we have now. RCN needs to get their act together, unless they don't want the Lehigh Valley market anymore. I'm just waiting for a class action lawsuit to follow through about how we pay more, and get less.

Here was an odd example I found... RCN was advertising their movie package for $24.99 in all markets but the Lehigh Valley on their website... the ad for the Lehigh Valley, $29.99. Why the $5 extra bucks? I look at how many channels they recieve, about 50 or so more digital channels for about $5 less too. If RCN were to send us a letter with a planned date of a crush, and a charge of $5 or $10 to go towards the HD movement as a temporary thing... then so be it, i'm all in for more HD channels. Yet, they recently raised my bill $10 for what? Nothing. Yeah i'm complaining, but the addition of HD to these other markets warrents money spent to get their feed, which means... how i'm taking it anyways... screw the Lehigh Valley, they got 33 HD channels, they should be happy. And to be honest, I would be if I had certain channels in HD they're offering in other markets, but take that 33, and minus ten from that for premium HD channels i don't get.

If the cartoons aren't in HD, then meh.

But the Simpsons in HD is a massive improvement over the SD version--so much visually richer. It's jarring to see the old ones.

It's like beating a dead horse at this point. I've watched my internet speeds go down the crapper and have come to deal with the fact that we will never get the amount of HD as the other markets at this point, even though we shell out the same amount of cash. Whatever.

Re: Cartoon HD coming July 1 to all Analog Crush Markets :

I'm with you there mightyhog. I just got a brand new 50" TV and figured it was a waste to stick with RCN for Cable TV. I kept the phone and internet, ditched the TV.
When I canceled, the nice lady on the phone wanted to know why I switched and she sounded like she wanted to offer me discounts, but it was too late. I told her that RCN should not have raised the prices in the LHV while now having to pay for Cinemax. I told her if RCN would have crushed the analog and I would have 80+ HD channels I would stick with RCN for TV.

Yeah actually many of the QAM modulators have 4 RF outputs in one 1U rack. So that's one (or two) AC connections for 4 QAM's , and each QAM can hold up to 15 SD or 3 HD (with robust stat mux compression).

Vs... old analog modulators which take 1 AC outlet for ONE CHANNEL.

The cost is mostly the new QAM modulators. It really doesn't cost something to remove an analog modulator from a rack and replace it. Your already paying headend techs a daily salary, not like they are going to demand a huge raise for swapping out equipment in the rack. I love doing that stuff at work. Plus, they could sell the old Analog modulators to other systems that use NTSC-M and the same US RF Bandplan. There are quite a few other countries that could use this stuff.

So you get energy savings, rack space savings, and plant bandwidth efficiency savings, without replacing line amps and line extenders.

And by the way, Cartoons look GREAT in HD! From the vibrant colors to the sharp lines, I'd MUCH RATHER watch cartoons in HD vs. SD (4:3 pillarbox OR stretched) anyday of the week.

@verizon.net

Re: Cartoon HD coming July 1 to all Analog Crush Markets :

having worked in dozens of headends across the country, there are more costs associated with adding even just one hd channel! it may require additional splitting of satellite signal, rack space and power for satellite receiver for channel being launched, stat mux license, license for rate shaping if used, wiring, ports on routers, splitters, etc if used. so folks dont think launching a channel is flip of switch or swap of mod. old NTSC mod have little value. mexico uses NTSC but there is an abundance of surplus equipment out there with every american and canadian cable company going all digital.

Re: Cartoon HD coming July 1 to all Analog Crush Markets :

yeah, I'm sorry guys... I've been mistaken. Aparently TMC and TCM are two different channels. All this time when i've been watching "TMC" i thought it was "Turner Movie Classics." Aparently "TMC" means "The Movie Channel." So, when I thought the Lehigh Valley had a minor plus to other markets, I eat my own dust, yet again. :P

Same story in DC. Palladia HD was part of the original Analog Crush HD lineup, but we've never seen a trace of it.

I'm assuming if it does launch soon it will launch July 1 with Cartoon/others and I would expect it on 652 here in Chicago.

From »www.broadcastingcable.com/articl···h_HD.php :
MSNBC in HD will launch at different times on different MSOs. It will debut on Cablevision on June 29 and on Time Warner in July. By the end of August, MSNBC HD will be available in 11 million homes.

Alright, I have it now @ 633 here in Chicago
As of right now (5:44 AM CST) the show on just seems to be a stretched & upscaled version of the SD channel, which is kinda annoying

Don't see anything else new on the lineup, and still no MSNBC-HD, TCM HD or any of those Viacom ones that RCN have yet to dip into carrying.
