Re: DNS service - NS records

Caneris has free DNS hosting for one domain and it's pretty cheap for more than one domain. I have only one domain but so far so good and they know what they're doing.

The DNS service is at the bottom of this page »www.caneris.com/Hosting

I've been using them for years for about 50 domains. I couldn't give them a higher recommendation.

Best to setup your own DNS Server (»windowsDNSServer.com) and set up all the sub domains that you want, on your domians , including parking page generation for pages that dont exist, or sub site search

Then register the name server (or two) with NSol

I do not have any domains with networksolutions.com, but I know godaddy, and namecheap allow you to control DNS from their control panel, at no extra cost....Try asking networksolutions.com if they have an option for that.

Thanks zinc,

yes, definitely ...wonky... (not proper).

Will check out the CustomDNS - thanks for the suggestion. Didn't know they offered such a service, always thought dyndns was mostly for home users wanting to run services.

They don't support it because that's not proper DNS.

If someone asks for ww33.yourdomain.com, the DNS server should query:
1. root dns - what are NS for .com
2. .com DNS - what are NS for yourdomain.com
3. yourdomain.com DNS - what are NS for ww33.yourdomain.com

So you need to run your own DNS servers (or outsource) to get this working.

I used to use www.dyndns.org CustomDNS, their expert interface will let you set this up, it's $27.50/domain/year

I now run my own DNS servers, so it's unnecessary.

Looking at networksolutions.com, I'm not sure they (fully) support NS records; we have a few domains with them (over 80), but only one or two which have "special" requirements (subdomain) for NS records, mainly for 3rd party services (coremetrics).

Curious if anyone's managed NS records via networksolutions.com, and if so, if there's any way to do the following:

ww33.**Domain_Name_Here**.com. 300 IN NS ns1.coremetrics.com.

If it's just not possible, can anyone vouch for a good DNS hosting service that can deliver a reliable service at a flat rate (preferably yearly, though monthly wouldn't be out of the question)???
