Re: Preferred Broadband Service

I could get ATT DSL here, or use the Brighthouse cable Internet. So far I've decided to stick with the cable.

You have a choice? What planet do you live on? I am a Time Warner Customer. You basically have the following choices: Time Warner (or Earthlink, which is Time Warner). Choice two is...well there isn't any choice two. Maybe someday UVerse will come but according to Lorentz special space dilation principle availability of new AT&T services always approaches infinity from all points in space at all times.
A I said in my original post there is a choice...AT&T DSL or TimeWarner Cablemodem...and the planet is Earth, you know, the 3rd rock from the sun.

I think the "better" ISP for VoIP is the one that can consistently provide the lower latency and lower jitter. There's no rule of thumb between cable and DSL -- some claim cable can be less stable if the node you're on is overcrowded and that's less likely to happen with DSL. I've been using VoIP with Brighthouse MI cable for over four years and have never had trouble, though.

Unless there's some way to actually test either flavor of connection with »testyourvoip.com/ I'd just go by price. Bandwidth isn't a real issue, best quality takes about 90 Kbps up and down. Just don't run other bandwidth hogs at the same time.

I've had both Optimum Online (cable) and Comcast (cable) for going on 8 years, with no problems. YMMV!

Early on (2004) I had Vonage with TimeWarner cable, and had no end of problems. At the same time a friend of mine had AT&T DSL and never experienced problems.

Presently I have Verizon FIOS and my Vonage service is excellent. Now, a friend is moving and wants to have Vonage and is trying to decide which broadband service to choose. Her options are AT&T DSL and TimeWarner cablemodem. From my own experience I would suggest DSL, but I am looking for second opinions.

Which broadband service would you consider to work best with Vonage?
