Re: DSL - most flexable/configurable DSL modems?

I have had several discussions with ISP, and it is apparent that I am not going to make any progress on that front. ("we only say 'up to' ...")
Your "up to" speeds from your ISP have nothing to do with the DSL standard that the Modem connects to the DSLAM with. There appears to be an issue as seen with the Modem's inability to determine initial sync standard type that you need to get to your upper support tier with.

oh that ... I'd have to dig to re-locate the url where I found the info, but as I said earlier this appears to be simply a bug in the web interface code in the modem firmware. ie the case statement that says if mode is X then put string "Y" to the web page text.

The modem itself is ok, it's just the generated web page. I've looked around for other firmware versions -- but now we are getting into issues with a specific make / model of modem which isn't appropriate for this forum.

...

Have been trying various google searches; so far have found

which allows one to explicitly choose between
Multi-mode (default)
G.DMT (G.992.1)
G.Lite (G.992.2)
ANSI T 1.413 Issue 2

You can do that with any modem (as long as they support Multi-mode) using their Telnet interface.

My Speedstream does that.

Now we're getting somewhere!

As far as I can determine my Westell 6100 does not have a telnet interface nor does it permit these sorts of changes via the web interface.

What "speedstream" in particular do you have, and
do you consider it to be one of the more flexible /configurable modems, and
are there other modems that are considered particularly strong in this aspect?

Thanks!

The Westell 6100 supports many DSL Standards, and it will usually connect with what the DSLAM is offering it first time. The DSLAM tries its preferred choice first (depending on the DSLAM and it's default settings) which could be G.DMT or ADSL2+ or any other like ANSI T1.413 Modulation.

I'm using a Speedstream 4200 Modem/Router with a Linksys 10/100 Multi-port Switch to support my 7 PC LAN (no other Router as the 4200 is a Router). It was supplied to a Windstream customer that I purchased off of eBay.com for under $15.00 shipped. It is a 4200 D246 Model which is the newer Windstream version instead of the older 4200 D242 version from Windstream.

This thread below shows the Model/Part Numbers Info on the Windstream 4200s.

»which of these modems is the newest?

I had to unlock the Telnet server as the Windstream 4200 has it blocked/locked. It is pretty easy to change/enable that. The unlock uses the same procedure that works on the 5200.

»A50 FW on 5200, no telnet or FTP !!!
