Re: D-Link Banning Users and Deleting Posts Critical Of D-Link

What were the issues with 1.11? I'm currently using 1.16b3 and for the most part its ok but the other day it did turn stupid on me. 1.12 has broken game rules but fixed the spontaneous reboot I got with rtsp pages using 1.02.

If I didn't upgrade past 1.11, you would most likely have never seen me in this forum. This router was a powerhouse of rape and win, now it's mediocre junk.
Still waitin on an answer to my previous question Fireblade...

I wouldn't be surprised if next we get a george forman cooking router. Grills burgers while you surf the net. lol
Well with the heat issues apparently caused by the latest firmware revision you should already be able to cook burgers on your dgl-4500.

I'm from Canada, we have different rules here - I doubt I could piggyback on your countries legal system. I already swapped my busted A1 with a new A3 a few months ago and I don't want a 3rd... I actually got sick of it the other day and sold it for $90 - I bought one of those new Netgear Dual-Band routers instead and they're fucking amazing. D-Link will not get another penny from me.

Damn man sorry to hear that. I honestly hadn't considered Canadians also being affected by this and how to best include them. I need to make a phone call on Monday and get those answers. You've brought up a big concern. This isn't just a USA issue, I suspect country differences between equipment aren't great enough to make you guys immune. I know from country to country the output levels are different but that shouldn't affect anything else. Obviously you are having the problem as well so my hunch there is probably correct. Therefore I'll get some answers. I don't know why you would be excluded and the BBB will work for you just as well as it has Americans. The BBB is a private organization that specializes in mediation between business and consumer. No government BS.

I'll post back on Monday as soon as I get an answer.

Haha, I know 2 other people that have my same problem but they won't talk to me after I updated them to 1.32...

I managed to stabilize one of them by disabling DNS Relay, but unfortunately, the other one needed it enabled for his network setup. He's pretty much SOL, I think he's going to swap his out, still in warranty.

Hello, just wanted to let all who post here, or just read the posts here, that I was banned from the Dlink forums today for expressing my displeasure in the unprofessional attitude of one of the Dlink Technical Engineers. It all started with several people posting concerns about the security of the DIR-825 router. And yes, I do know that the subject on closed vs stealthed ports is truly a touchy one, but I certainly did not expect an engineer to call the whole thing silly and then lock the post...especially after there was no reply to the post for several weeks. I did expect some discussion and was willing to hear all sides, but Lycan came into the conversation and then locked the post. I started a new post to address my surprise and displeasure with anyone from Dlink freely calling customer concerns silly and then locking people out of the discussion. (In other words, they think the customer is stupid and their issues are not important enough to address in a meaningful manner.) Then Lycan retracts his statement and states that he was saying the whole post was silly. Well yeah, that is what I was addressing.

I didn't really care that the second post was locked. I had said my piece and was moving on. But when I went to log in this evening, I was informed that I had been banned from the forum for trolling/flaming.

Well, I did state in one of those posts that I was finished with Dlink, but I did have second thoughts and was almost willing to give them a second chance. But now that I see I have been banned, I am absolutely angered not only with the unprofessional conduct of the people that work for Dlink...but in their substandard products as well. Time to make the move to a different manufacturer.

The posts are:

»forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=7565.0

and

»forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=8180.0

In the first link above, Lycan's original post before he edited was:
The DIR-825_A is a Ubicom product. By default Ubicom stealth's ports when no traffic is being sent. The 825_b is not a Ubicom platform and does not follow their "stealth" procedure. As BOFslime points out Shields Up is a "joke". As for the users that believe that they're not protected unless their ports return as stealth-ed, then the 825_b is NOT the router for you. We suggest that you purchase a true firewall and not a SOHO NAT device.

I'm locking this thread due to it's silliness.

I think that they're being pressured by d-link to do those kinds of things. I believe that many people are being turned off to them because of the all the negative posts. D-link did this to themselves when they screwed their customers who in turn made their experiences public. I honestly don't believe that d-link will release a fw to fix the problems they've created.

I don't think so either Puff. Its sad because DLink (at one time) had excellent products and everyone ranted and raved about them. But now all I see, read and hear is problems, problems, problems!!

And I was holding on to this piece of junk router because I thought there would be some genuine concern for fixing the problems and making things right with the customer. BOY was I wrong!!

Mods are evil, despicable creatures.

I've already weighed in on the closed ports issue. As risks go, having a couple of low-numbered ports showing as closed is pretty minor. I also happen to think Gibson's site is overblown to be kind. He's a fear monger who gets people spun up over nothing.

Where I think D-Link is dropping the ball - and badly - is by continuing to dodge, weave and refuse to be accountable for some of the issues.

1. Fix the firmware so that it can be rolled back to any previous version. Whatever money they hoped to save by narrowing the support window has been more than pissed away in extra calls and lost sales/goodwill.

There were many happy users of 1.x.x who are now up in arms because of foibles in 1.3.x but who can't go back.

2. Don't pass the buck. Hiding behind the OEM, saying it's not a Ubicom design so you can't expect it to behave thus and so is BS. Who qualifies the OEM supplier? Whose name and reputation is on the box? It cheapens the brand to say "We're just relabeling, so we can't do anything."

3. Banning people because they expose a product issue - not personal attacks or disrupting the site - only creates ill will. If they had said something like "We've evaluated this carefully, consulting with leading security experts and do not believe the observed behavior exposes our customers to any risk" would be more acceptable than "Go away."

The "purchase a true firewall" comment was icing on the cake, though. It's no wonder he edited it.

Oh yes they will because if they don't they will be buying back a whole ton of equipment, they just don't know it yet. Thats all I'm saying for now.

Thank you so much for sharing your story with all D-link users and potential new customers. It's critical that everyone do the same thing you've just done. D-link is banking on that most won't and they're sorely mistaken.

My next question is..do you currently have a D-Link product that is not performing as advertised due to a firmware update or defective firmware? Have you followed the instructions outlined in this thread? If not please spend a few self help minutes and lets get the ball rolling. If you need me I'm here quite often or feel free to contact me privately.

No_Strings, thank you for your comments...you put it all into very good perspective. The issue was pretty minor but as you stated in #3, they could have been more tactful with their reply. I just kept bumping the post to get a reply from them and then when I did, it was not what I expected. If they had been tactful, I probably would have just requested they keep the issue in mind for the next firmware fix. Not as a security fix but as a cosmetic fix.

What I got out of his statement that he posted (before editing) is that Lycan has no confidence in his company's products, he (or she) knows their products have major issues, and they are trying their best to point the finger in any direction but their own. Their complete disregard for any issue with the router is what upsets me the most. I've always practiced, "whatever you do, do it right and do it right the first time".

ispgeek, unfortunately I do not know what instructions you speak of...this is a long thread and I don't have a lot of time to search the entire thing. Yes I do have many Dlink products, of which two are not operating as advertised. But they are out of warranty period so I'm chalking them up as losses. If it takes me a year, I will sell all Dlink products I have...I don't want any Dlink products in my home. I refuse to support companies that don't have any interest in their customers and where the almighty dollar rules. Quite frankly they can kiss my almighty butt. I am done with them and will tell everyone I know to avoid Dlink at all costs.

Here you go...I'll make it easy for you. Want to see some action or get a refund? This is how you do it (regardless of warranty).

If you are an owner of a D-link product with hardware/firmware problems that are still unresolved despite all your efforts to have them resolve them or if you have recently upgraded your firmware only to have your router become useless or not perform as advertised. Immediately follow the instructions below and wait for more details on a website that is being developed now to assist you with these problems.

In the meantime...you need to do the following immediately.

1). File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau at www.bbb.org (this will get an immediate response from Dlink and replacement of your router - at least for now)

2). File a complaint with the California Department of Consumer Affairs at »www.dca.ca.gov/online_services/c···nt.shtml

3). File a complaint with YOUR state's consumer affairs.

4.) File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at »https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FT···?Lang=en

5.) File a complaint with Rippoffreport.com at »www.ripoffreport.com/login.asp

You may use the complaint text for each one (that way it saves you loads of time). Also save your paperwork and all emails, conversations, phone records...everything! Do NOT dispose of, sell, trade or otherwise let the hardware go as this may become valuable evidence for authorities.

Your warranty status does NOT matter. Facts are if the firmware update that D-Link provided caused the damage they are liable to fix and/or repair the damage in a reasonable period of time.

That is the sad reality that some of the posters do not get. Dlink is just a branding house, it does not add any content. Netgear and others are the same, so buying other branded products is not an improvement.
The forums may be outsourced as well, so the moderator does not really care.

This thread has it moments and the OP has rally up the troops to fight a good cause, but frankly too much of a hassle to report the problem and sit and wait for them to come to your aid. Just easy to go online to order something else or go buy one in the retail store and call it a day.

Its just hardware that's cheap to produce as plastic router. PCB use in it pretty standard among the companies that sell this stuff. If you really want something better then spend $300+ bucks on 16ANT radius wireless 802.11a/b/g/n network device.

Tipster I don't disagree but times are tough and people just don't have the money to throw out equipment they just spent $150 or more on. The amount of time it takes to file the BBB complaint is about 10 minutes and the response time is about 48 hours depending on if its a weekend or not. Filers are given two options from D-link that I know of so far. (1) Replacement or (2) money back.

And honestly at this point it goes way beyond the money....

Some good news, got my refund today. Sept 28th, took a while, but i see that as a plus in D-link experience.

Got a full refund of what I payed for DGL-4500.

sorry don't agree with that.

just because you might consider it "cheap" a 170+ dollar router is not cheap, and it is no excuse for bad product breaking firmware updates.
