Re: [Travel] Road trip, anyone?!

Rats figures there aren't any in Key West.... actually don't think there is a Thrifty here.

Interesting that one pick up AND delivery points is Jacksonville....must have a surplus of big or small cars.

One thing puzzles me though is that JAX is listed both as a point of origin and point of delivery...
Maybe they figure if you drive one of their cars from Miami to Jacksonville that one car is that much further north than it otherwise would have been. I would suspect dropping the car off at the same location would defeat the purpose of the deal.

One thing to keep in mind, which may work to someone's advantage, is that flights TO Florida right now from the North/Northeast (and usually through the summer) are historically cheaper than FROM Florida at this time of year...due to all the snowbirds and "transplants" coming home for the summer.

There've been a few times when I've been able to score 1 way tickets down from "points North" for as little as $29-$49 one way.

One thing puzzles me though is that JAX is listed both as a point of origin and point of delivery...

Thrifty car rental has an overabundance of automobiles in quite a few Florida locations and is looking to get them back across the country on the cheap. So, you can rent one of their cars for $1 per day if you agree to deliver them to certain locations across the country. Here are the details

You can pick up the cars at one of these locations:

Ft Lauderdale (FLL)
Ft Myers (RSW)
Miami (MIA)
Orlando (MCO)
Tampa (TPA)
West Palm Beach (PBI)
Jacksonville (JAX)

You must deliver them to one of these locations:

Chicago Midway (MDW)
Chicago O'Hare (ORD)
Cincinatti (CVG)
Columbus (CMH)
Dayton (DAY)
Kansas City (MCI)
Louisville (SDF)
Philadelphia (PHL)
Jacksonville (JAX)

Here's the fine print:

Terms and Conditions

* Return vehicle to a participating drop location to avoid a $65.00/dy rate along with applicable drop charges. This special offer may only be obtained by booking the reservation online through the thrifty.com web site or by phone.
* Optional LDW ranges from $9.99 to $25.99 per day depending upon vehicle type and location.
* Check your automobile insurance policy or credit card protection for rental vehicle coverage.
* A limited number of vehicles are available at this promotional rate at participating locations and may or may not include a midsize car.
* Rental has a 7-day maximum rental period.
* Holiday and other blackout periods apply.
* Renter must meet minimum age, driver and credit requirements.
* Offer applies to drivers 21 and over.
* Unlimited mileage may be geographically restricted.
* Taxes, surcharges, vehicle license recoupment fees, vehicle license tax recoupment fees, additional driver fee and optional items, such as refueling, are extra.
* Airport concession fees, customer facility charge or airport access fees if you choose to exit on our shuttle may apply at some airports.
* Additional charges may apply.
* Offer not combinable with any other offer or promotion and has no cash value.
* Early return or late return fees may apply if you return the vehicle before or after the reserved due date.
Keep in mind that a one-way plane ride back home might be a little pricey. I like the idea of Floridians leaving the state and not returning. I know I'd like to throw a couple people in the car and send them on their way.
