Work Zone Speeding Tix

Looks like IL just upped the ante on the work zone speeding tickets.
Used to be that some work zones might have a camera van and you might get a ticket.

Starting July 1 2009 it will be every zone will have a camera and everybody 1mph over will get a $375 ticket 2nd offense is still the same $1k fine but now includes 90 day suspension of license.

They just read the updated press release on WGN radio.

Remember 45MPH in the work zones guys.

Thats a load of BS IMO. If you hit a worker in IL, its a $10,000 fine but if you hit a worker in Wisconsin, its a $7500 fine. So if you hit a worker in IL and drag him over to Wisconsin, you come out $2500 ahead. Personal stimulus plan right there .

1mph it's that to small under a margin of error and that will likely over load the courts.

Yes that letter is from 2005. But the update that was read on WGN radio stated that it was the same thing but now all work zones would have cameras were as before it was select zones.

I see the "Photo Enforced" signs in every work zone and have for a long time, but don't think I've ever actually seen a camera van.

So does this mean they're gonna have a camera out there 24/7?
Or is this press release just meant to refresh peoples memories/scare them into slowing down?

There is no way the state could afford enough camera vans to cover every construction area.

I drove to O'Hare just the other day to pickup my MIL and if they really enforce the 1mph over thing they'll be rich. I slowed down to 50mph and I had people up my butt like they were trying to see what I ate for breakfast.

I mean I even got passed by a semi for christ's sake....in the work zone where it says "stay in your own lane" even.

Driving home on I294-S Tuesday evening, about 8pm, I had a County cruiser light me up for going ~55mph in the center lane. Just a quick gtfo-reminder I guess, one quick chirp, I moved right, and he cruised past. Proceeded to follow the flow at that point at 80mph...

They put this stuff out every year. Scare tactics. Do be aware in work zones, but it's more of a danger to be going that much slower than traffic flow than to be with the traffic flow. That's a first-hand statement from numerous LEOs over the years.

Exactly... fines like this for 1mph over will pay for itself in no time AND bring the state out of debt faster.

Or it'll backfire like all the sin and other sales taxes that have done nothing more than send people elsewhere to make their purchases.

If they drive people off of the toll ways not only do they lose the ticket revenue but the tolls too.

The DOT had a rep on the radio today saying that they were only going to have 5 vans again this year. The original press release is gone form the site now.

On Monday, I was a passenger in an airport shuttle whose driver refused to go even a mile over the limit on the expressway. He thought the IDOT road cams -- you know, the ones they use to monitor the flow of traffic from an ops center somewhere -- were being used for photo enforcement. It was a little obnoxious.

Found the 2005 press release at this URL
»www.dot.state.il.us/press/033005.html

Under enhanced penalties passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Rod Blagojevich last year, first-time work zone speeders, including those caught on camera, will be hit with a fine of $375, with $125 of that sum going to pay off-duty State Troopers to provide added enforcement in construction or maintenance zones. Two-time offenders are subject to a $1,000 fine, including a $250 surcharge to hire Troopers, and the loss of their license for 90 days.

Starting in July, State Troopers will deploy specially equipped vans that can take photographs of drivers speeding in IDOT and Tollway construction and maintenance zones. Tickets will be issued by mail to vehicle owners.
...
Photo enforcement vans will be equipped with cameras designed to record a clear image of the vehicle and driver, it’s speed, and registration plate. The registered owner will not be liable if someone else is driving the vehicle.

did not see anything about 1 mph.

Anything above the speed limit is speeding. It all depends on how tightly they want to enforce the law.

Yeah it depends on the cop. I was watching that show "Speeders" and they were in Orland park. The cop they were with that day said he gives people a 12 mph cushion. Others said 5 or 10.

Problem comes when you get the third parties involved in issuing the tickets and taking a cut. Just like with the turning right on red Nazis running the red light cameras.

the 3rd parys ones can only be billed to the car and not your record as that needs a live cop to do.
