 | [*nix hosting] My Own Webserver So I just registered a new domain with Godaddy and did not elect to the Webhosting that was offered to me. I have a business line from Brighthouse, 2 Ubuntu servers running Intranet apps and database server. Would it be possible to host my web/email servers from my office and have godaddy do all of the DNS, MX, etc. for me? If this is an option, what do I need to do? |

 | You need to setup some sort of LAMP server, if you want to use ubuntu, you can follow these steps :
»howtoforge.com/basic-web-server-···ramework
otherwise, I prefer centos 5.3, and ISP config (nice little management utility, kind of like cPanel, but free).

 | The LAMP system has been in place for a few years was more concerned about the DNS and MX records and how I can make that work with the situation I have described. Thanks for the link and the suggestion for ISP config, looks interesting. |

1 edit | reply to steelingbox I just logged into my godaddy and checked a domain and it does allow for 'total dns control' which let's you specify A HOST, MX records, CNAMES, etc.
Since it does allow for that, what do you mean 'what do I do' ? You can just plop in the IP address to your web server, and assuming your webserver is also your mail server, your MX record can be mail.webserver.com, You could try an @ to your IP address of the web server too.

Your options are based on your situation. Do you have a static or dynamic IP on your Brighthouse business line? |
|
 | They are static ip's!
I have always had my sites hosted and was not sure if I was able to do what I wanted. Finding things on Godaddy is a chore, there is so much presented to you all at once. I will never use Godaddy again. They need to simplify their website. |
|
 | reply to steelingbox I prefer namecheap personally.
Godaddy is complicated IMO, they need to remove the bloatedness of it, and just simplify the layout a little bit. -- »vivicalhosting.com - Affordable web hosting
