[Auto] The End of F1?!

They been threating for years now. Now they went and did it.

The Formula One Teams’ Association has thrown the sport into total chaos by announcing its eight members will set up their own breakaway series at the end of the season.

The teams are Brawn GP, Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso.

Seems this will do to F1 what IRL did to CART?

I think this is just the next "step" in negotiations between the teams and Max/Bernie. I still think they'll reach an agreement. I did see a translation of something from the Monaco organizers telling the FIA that if the top teams are not in F1, they will not renew their contract when it expires next year. I'm thinking a lot of organizers will be saying the same thing. They're not going to pay Bernie his insane sanctioning fees if the big boys aren't racing.

The next turn of events will be interesting - F1 will be dead without the big boys and they know it. It maybe another couple of months before an agreement is reached but I do expect one as well.

Wow ....

Did not check on any news in past 24 hours because have been moving, and wake up to hear this.

Another split in open wheel racing would be a disaster in my opinion, and do believe that FOTA is doing this to negotiate with the FIA.

I think that is the point that, they are tired of El Supremo and they're not gonna take it anymore.

quote:
SILVERSTONE, England(AP)—Formula One intends to sue the eight teams that announced plans for a rival series next season - the biggest crisis to engulf the sport since the championship began in 1950.

The governing body accused the Formula One Teams Association of “serious violations of law.” The breakaway came after Ferrari, championship leader Brawn GP and six other teams failed to resolve a dispute over the introduction of a budget cap for next season.

“The actions of FOTA as a whole, and Ferrari in particular, amount to serious violations of law, including willful interference with contractual relations, direct breaches of Ferrari’s legal obligations and a grave violation of competition law,” the organization said in a statement.

The ruling body, known as FIA, has delayed publishing the final entry list for the 2010 season. It said it will begin legal proceedings “without delay.”

FIA president Max Mosley is trying to prevent the departure of Ferrari, which has participated since that inaugural series, Brawn GP, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso.

Yep. Without Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, et.al., F1 is dead. Most fans will not show up to watch Williams, Force India, USF1, etc., race.

For all the talk Max is saying that they will reach a agreement FOTA says it's too late.

I think it's just more posturing. I saw somewhere that Bernie is now in favor of dropping the budget caps. He knows that F1 needs Ferrari, and to a lesser extent McLaren and the others. I still think they'll work something out. There's a meeting of some sort on Wednesday with the World Motor Sport Council. Maybe if they throw Max out, things can move forward.

Mosley states agreement with rebel teams
Following today's World Motor Sport Council meeting held in Paris, FIA President Max Mosley stated that an agreement has been reached with the FOTA alliance, thereby putting an end to the rebel teams' plans to set up a breakaway series next year.

"There will be no split," Mosley announced. "We have agreed to a reduction of costs."

Mosley added: "There will be one F1 championship but the objective is to get back to the spending levels of the early 1990s within two years."

Glad to hear they got everything worked out. Now, let's see if Montreal or Indy can get back on the calendar (I think there's a better shot at Montreal).

eh, Indy to me is an oval course that has a makeshift road course and even though Montreal is a good venue the people don't really want english speaking visitors so it doesn't seem like a big loss to me.

The British GP is the one I'd go see even if they still raced here in NA.

I was at the Canadian GP a few years ago and didn't get any feel for them not wanting English only speaking visitors. We had a great time and would have no hesitation going back. I've also been to Silverstone for the British GP, also a great time.
