| How do I ID cogeco owned equipment?
Hi,
I'm always seeing cable modems and starting to see digital boxes for sale at yard sales, in thrift stores, etc. How do I tell if they belong to cogeco? My rented Inforanger modem has a "Property of Cogeco" sticker on it, but some I've seen lately at buddies houses don't.
Just would be rather annoying if I picked up some equipment and phoned for a connection and they said "Actually that belongs to us" Especially if they demand it back and I'm out the coin I spent on it.
However, I noticed when I moved that Cogeco charges immediately for un-returned equipment, or on disconnection, and the modem or whatever is then "bought" unless returned for credit... so that would imply that any equipment in the wild has actually been paid for by someone...
Anyone ever had problems with getting used equipment connected for that reason?
Thanks,
Andrew |

| cable modems are not sold for subs to use cogeco network, so unless they bought it from ebay or something i wouldnt pick it up. As well comcast doesnt sell digital boxes either so....
call cogeco and the call center might be able to tell you if its a rental (dct) or owned by them (modem) |

| reply to ItalCanadese I was thinking about swapping it, when 10Mbit rolled out and I was getting 5.5Mbit out of it, since then I've moved and I can only get a consistant 3-4Mbit, with occasional 4-5Mbit spikes... and the rumors about hard capping have been flying for years, I figured I'd stick with the thinner straw so I wasn't emptying my cup too fast... with 3 people using it, still struggling to stay under 2GB a day and that's with no hefty file downloads. For actual sites I use I never see much better than 250KB/sec transfers anyway. |

I've got it in my basement If Cogeco wants to buy it from me I'll be charging their gigabyte markup so it will be pricey |

Wow, I don't even know if I want to answer this one...
I'm sure there are customers on the Cogeco network who own their own modems...through acquiring previous cable systems where users bought their modems...(Arris Cornerstone modems?)
TPIA companies who own the modems...but....in reality Andrew, since I believe Cogeco doesn't charge a lease fee anymore for the modems and they cover all the warranty and issues should the modem fail, you're just best off to stay away from buying anything like that...same with the DCTs.
BTW, stick with the Inforanger, rock solid modem . 100% Rock Solid. |

Did some work for a client this past Tuesday who still had an Inforanger. 2 edits | If you're on Pro, most definitely swap for the RCA. If you're on Standard, I think there is a marginal increase. I was told that my 245R would not handle the 10Mbit Pro at the time. If you're on Lite Plus or Lite, no need to worry.
However, getting the modem swapped is free provided there is actually something wrong with it. Though I bet if you were to show the store rep you still have an old modem, they will switch it. Just tell them you're considering switching to Pro one day, but not at the moment and would like to be ready anyways. |

| Yeah I had the zenith, looked god ugly, like someone made it at home.. but it was 1997 or so... 500kps up and down was very fast, %99 of internet users were doing 28.8, 33.6 or ish 56.0
I was upgraded to the inforanger in 1999, got it for free as well.. i was happy for a while, i was getting 5mbit down, 4mbit up... before cogeco figured out how to cap the upstream.. websites were the limiting factor.. only a handful that would keep up... basically the some of the fastest residential internet in the world... for 39.99/ month..
I moved back 10 years later; hard drives a 1000x bigger, 100x more ram, CPU is at least 100x faster; all this for 1/5 the price.. sadly the internet i came back to is.. just more expensive.. with overages and restrictive caps. Odd how we are going so far backwards... and the idea of being a leader in communication's has been blown right out the window. Good work guys!
Oh and yes.. looks like you've lost the ability to run cable correctly/legally too... your temp was cut again |
