| [Newsgroups] Searching UseNet Question? What makes the Differenc
Ok this is a searching question.
I have used Giganews with Newsbin Search and Newsleecher with SuperSearch, and also the online Newsleacher Global Search.
I have used the same search phrases and each search comes up with different results.
My question really is what makes the difference on you search, does it matter which Usenet server you are using (Usenetserver, Giganews, etc) OR search engine?
Does the search engine use the provider to look for your query? I ask because I noticed Newsbin search found a lot more of what I was looking for. However I like the Newsleecher program a lot better. I want to use Newsleeacher but not pay for SuperSearch, I'd rather pay and use the Newsbin search.
Was the Newsbin search better because I was using Giganews at the time or does it matter which provider I use. Is it just that Newsbin is a better search then SuperSearch.
I know there are a lot of questions here but it boils down to which is the best searcher and do I need to be with a certain Usenet service to get the most results.

| Re: [Newsgroups] Searching UseNet Question? What makes the Diffe
It boils down to which interface you are comfortable with. I'm happy with the indexing provided with my client, so I don't pay for an external service. They average out having the same results and times, but you do have to learn which search terms are better for your tastes. For example, "Harry.Potter.And.The.Witches.Goat.On. Mars", may not be as efficient a search term as "hpatwg" if it's a scene release. You can be more accurate by fetching headers from your own provider, instead of relying on a service that may not get it's headers from your provider. Downloading headers isn't nearly as bad as it was before compression became the norm. |

My question really is what makes the difference on you search, does it matter which Usenet server you are using (Usenetserver, Giganews, etc) OR search engine? It relies on the search engine..it is not searching your current usenet provider. Think about it...if your provider has, say, 10 days retention, Supersearch is still going to let you search 400 days back. Naturally, if you were to select something 350 days old..it would come up missing. Keeping this in mind, you kind of have to search "smart" and keep the retention limits of whoever you are using, in mind. -- Block Accounts | UseNet Now |

| sounds like a reasonable explanation.
So any suggestions on why one is better than the others?
I have been using SuperSearch and UsenetServer's Global search for a while. Then I used Newsbin Search the past week and found stuff I have been looking for for a long time but did not show up in the others, using the same search string.
why is Newsbin better? any technical reasons? |

So any suggestions on why one is better than the others? Hmm...Let me pose this question to you...Is there any reason why Google, Yahoo or Bing are better search engines that the other? People will argue both sides...but in the end they all have there weaknesses.
Supersearch is great because it allows you to search through just about all groups easily, with custom search parameters and stuff like that....The downfall is, if someone posts something with a cryptic name or something, and you do nto use the right search terms, you may miss it...So Newzbin may be better....but the downside to that is, the reports are compiled and edited by humans, so there is a great deal they miss..especially with the larger groups.
My search process usualyl starts with Supersearch, if I dont find a lot of results..I go to Binsearch.info...and then if still nothing...Newzbin. -- Block Accounts | UseNet Now |

why is Newsbin better? any technical reasons? If you can't find what you're looking for on one search engine, try a different one because they don't all search the same newsgroups. I recommend you check these out: »Re: Are there any worthy alternatives to Newzbin.com?
Also, I VERY HIGHLY recommend you dump overpriced Giganews and get Astraweb: »Sign up at Astraweb now to pay $11/month for LIFE! -- »Check this out! |

I'm not sure what youre talking about.. it's my understanding RAW mode is just like searching millions of headers.. lately I've had to go to raw mode a few times with Newzbin cause it usually only hits 70% or 80% whatever their claim numbers is these days
It really is stupid that newzbin doesn't let users report un-indexed posts for the good of everyone.. ahh well maybe they'll be replaced if they lose their court case.. |

| reply to Ginn speaking of SuperSearch on NewsLeecher... does anyone know what source provider they are using to index the headers ? and, as a comment, making SuperSearch and NewsLeecher work without having to buy and pay for it is quite easy, but following the forum rules, i have to plead the 5th here. -- S.C.P.D.
