IS this legit?

Important Security Updates for your
AT&T High Speed Internet Service Account

Account #:
Dear

As part of ongoing enhancements to our service, we will be updating the security questions used to access your account information.

What's Changing?

We have developed new security questions which will be presented when accessing or requesting changes to your account such as changing your password, establishing additional mailboxes, etc. These questions will be ones which only you should know the answer to. This will offer you an added level of security while avoiding the use of common personally identifying information such as birth dates, mother's maiden name, etc.

What Do I Need to Do?

You will need to update the answers to these questions for security compliance and to ensure the best experience when you contact us for support. It's easy and will only take a few moments.

Just go to »helpme.att.net/securityupdate and follow the steps in the article to update your security questions and answers by 7/15/2009.

OR

You can navigate to this site through the Online Help Center:
• Type »helpme.att.net in the navigation bar in your browser. (If you have never been to this site or have recently cleared your cookies, you will need to enter your AT&T Member ID and choose your Service Domain and click "Continue.)

• You will be directed to the AT&T Internet Services Security Web site.
Once on the Help & Support home page, go to "Alerts" in the top left of the page and then choose "Keep your Internet Services Account Secure — Update/Add your Security Questions & Answers".

We hope you will continue to enjoy your AT&T High Speed Internet service. Thank you for choosing AT&T - Your World. Delivered.

Sincerely,
Your AT&T High Speed Internet Customer Care Team

JFC!

Could at&t make it look *any* more like a phishing email?

"just click on this link here and give us your userid/password and mother's maiden name....while your at it we need your SSN too"

!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????????????

They should at least qualify it with "read our anti-phishing guide and NEVER click on links like this when you get an email....well, OK every one you get but THIS one!"

Email 'sender's can be forged. Links to obvious phishing sites can be "click here"ed easily. WHY TF is at&t using email for this???????

How about a better idea...have them log into their web account with a URL that they know isn't crooked (helpme.att.net sounds funny, why not att.com?) and *then* present them with a link?

The 'att.net' domain has been with AT&T since before SBC bought AT&T. How suspicious is that, really?

Oh yah, the funny bit. My mom forwarded that moronic email (she is in Indiana which is SBC, so it not just a Southwestern Bell thing) and it ended up in my SBC "spam" bulk email folder! Yes, mom is in my address book...

If their own spam filters can't tell the difference, that really is a idiotic way of doing it.

It was funny enough to give me pause for thought. I used to be an at&t (sorry it was AT&T back then) @HOME member, and knew that user content used to be under the att.net domain...

The point is that to do this via email is MORONIC. It violates their own anti-phishing guidelines.

Even funnier: when I attempted to follow the instructions in the email shown, the login link took me to the UVerse security page -- but I don't have UVerse, just regular DSL. Guess I'll have to leave things just the way they are now and hope I never need to answer such questions...

That's where you update the security info at a uverse website I'm pretty sure it's the same website used to download the macafee att internet security suite
And the password reset tool is also on a uverse website

Same here...I'm not messing with it until they get their act together. Did you see the thing about them wanting us to enter some sort of 4-digit code?

The whole operation appears to be very poorly planned and executed by those who really should know better.

Yep. That 4-digit code is strictly a UVerse identifier.

Reminds me of the Yahoo! SSL messages that kept coming in here for more than a year before I found that one of the at&t routines was calling home using the deprecated port 25 interface...

Yup, recall the switchover to SSL mail. Actually was painless for me, but admit to having been very fortunate throughout the years when it comes to traumatic changes like that. Signed up in January of 1997 with SWBIS when I got my first PC, signed up for DSL with them in May of 1999 and then stayed around for the SBC transition. Now of course I'm abundantly blessed by the current ruling gods of AT&T. Can say with reasonable honesty that I've experienced very little hassles involving my Internet service during the decade + I've been with them; still wish though they'd use more common sense when coming up with these brainstorms which affect so many users across a broad spectrum.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one who is shaking my head over this...
