internet line drops almost everyday

i have the speedtouch 516 modem. ever since i signed up and because i use a router i put it in bridge mode. now internet jus doesnt work all of a sudden. i have to wait like an hour or two and then it will start working again. my modem is in bridge mode and my router is configured with pppoe. is there anyway to find out y the internet jus stops workin all of a sudden. tech support tells me to put the modem in bridge mode but thts already done. i have 2 routers the linksys wrt54g and the dir 628 from dlink. how ever both routers do not work when the line drops and both do work when the line is up and working. any help would be appreciated. thank you.

  Hi

If i understood your message correctly, TekSavvy's technical support
made you set your Thomson SpeedTouch 516 into "Bridge" mode. So,
what more did they tell you once it was done? How are we supposed
to know what's arong?!? What evidence do you intend to publish?...

Trying to picture the setup, but saying the 516 is in bridge mode, you should be using the 54 as the router (assuming you might be playing with MLPPP), and the 628 in switch mode rather than route mode. Let the 54 do all the DHCP work. Otherwise, the routers may issue each other a pile of addresses and lock up.

Can you post the stats for your connection (when it is connected)?

eg: Line attenuation and SNR margin? I'm want to see if it's your line that's causing your issue. I have my modem on bridge mode and a Asus WL-520GU router running MLPPP single link and it's been working fantastically.

[RFC] Connection / Speed Problems Checklist

Connection / Speed Problems Checklist ... first draft

What connection did you lose?

[a] the modem's ADSL connection was broken (modem lost sync)

[b] modem never lost sync but PPPoE session was terminated

[c] PPPoE session was never terminated, but . . .

[d] I don't know

What was computer doing at the time?

[e] P2P -- bit-torrent, games ; very busy

[f] something else in particular

[g] nothing in particular

[h] nothing at all

[i] I don't know

What are the symptoms of the problem -- what can you observe?

What have you done to diagnose the problem?

How often does it happen?

What do you think triggers it?

What do you think fixes it?

What is your connectivity set-up?

* [dry-loop|wet-loop] -- modem [ does PPPoE, does NAT, does DHCP, is bridged] -- router [does PPPoE, does NAT] -- PC [does PPPoE?]

* state make and model of modem and router

Suggestions:

Post your modem's line stats

Do not turn off your modem, unless it is unresponsive. Get information from it instead.

Do not turn off your router, unless it is unresponsive. Get information from it instead.

Learn how to access your modem's line stats, error stats, and logs. Same with your router.

Learn the difference between ...

* no dialtone
* no DSL
* no sync
* no PPPoE
* no DNS
* no routing
* performance issues

* line capacity ... profile rates ... sync rates

Understand that "end to end internet speed tests", especially speedtest.net, are worse than useless for measuring DSL connection.

Understand that your DSL sync rate is the most accurate measure of your DSL "speed".

Understand that your *net* speed is about 80% of your DSL rate.

Learn to use ping and traceroute.

Use precise language, avoiding vague expressions such as "my internet died" or "I got disconnected".

Speed Issues:

Use your ISP's speed test, not speedtest.net. speedtest.net is notorious for displaying impossible results.

If you must use "internet speed tests", use several different ones and check their consistency and agreement.

Never rely on torrent "speed" measures.

If your "speed" is less than 75% of your DSL rate, the problem is not a DSL problem!

Re: internet line drops almost everyday

the teksavvy tech staff put the modem in bridge mode and said to put the router in pppoe mode and said it shud work fine after tht. im not usin MLPPP. im usin the default router login to setup pppoe. it does start to work fine until after a few hours it loses connection. all the lights on the modem and router lights are on as it shud be when it does work. but when i open int explorer or firefox it says page cannot be displayed cuz no internet available.

how do i check line attenuation and SNR margin ?

edit: im assuming i shud use DMT to get the line stats? and if i do shud i be connected directly to the modem or shud i be connected to the modem through the router?

modem is speedtouch 516 (bridge mode)
router is linksys wrt54 G (pppoe mode)

Hi,

In my opinion, a 'DMT' capture would be nice as a
preliminary step and then 'DSL_StatScope' would
be user-friendly enough should you need to go on
with trouble-shooting but i don't want to interfere
with TekSavvy's technical staff: i was just quite
curious about what's next on their mind!...

Where are you located exactly ? I'm curious cause I've been getting noise and drops very frequently recently, and I can't figure out why.

im located at weston and sheppard in toronto.

the teksavvy tech support staff told me tht to configure the router i have to call the router tech support. but from the posts i have read the router jus has to be setup with pppoe and it shud be fine. however this does work but int stops working after a few hours anyway.

edit: tech staff jus mentioned u r on the edge of the network and therefore sometimes it will drop but its every 4 or 5 days and it shud be for a few seconds. i did mention it drops almost everyday and its for 30 mins to 1 hour. he said tht shudnt happen but did not say y its happening for tht long and tht frequently

Can you check the hardware version of your router? I'm assuming it's V5.0 or higher.
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys_WRT54G_series

Were you doing Torrents or Games (p2p) at the time?

. . .

If the modem's DSL light never drops or flashes, I wouldn't waste my time chasing after "DSL problems". You can determine whether you have lost sync without consulting the modem:

When you lose sync (DSL connection), your PPPoE session is terminated. After DSL re-syncs, a new PPPoE is established, and you almost certainly get a new (dynamic) WAN IP address.

Thus, if your WAN IP address does not change (or your router's log indicates no PPP disconnection), you can be quite confident that your modem did not re-sync, and therefore, that your problem is not caused by any "DSL problem".

. . .

Of course it is easy enough to connect (directly) to the modem and check the DSL uptime.

. . .

When the problem happens, can you access the router's web interface?
Does it show a PPPoE connection, with a WAN IP address and a WAN gateway IP address?
Can you ping the WAN gateway?

If not, can you reconnect PPPoE?

If not, can you reboot the router?

Or can you not access the router's web interface any more?
If so (only if your router is unresponsive) ... power cycle.

((if your router has no power switch) I would unplug the power from the back of the router to minimize surges -- but this may not always be best. I would only cut power as a last resort if the router becomes unresponsive.)

If resetting the router "fixes" the problem (and reconnecting PPPoE does only sometimes), and especially if p2p is involved, or even many frequently auto-refreshing web pages, then you almost certainly have a connection-surge problem related to NAT/conntrack table running out of space.

The obvious (user-level) fix is to reduce your BT and game (steam!!) configurations to be the minimum.

If you are able to run something like Tomato on your router, you have other options.

It is in your own best interest to make every effeort to communicate with the most clarity and precision that you can, when trying to get technical help from people with knowledge, but who must rely on your words as the only source of information.

How can anyone (other than you) understand your meaning of:

it drops almost everyday and its for 30 mins to 1 hour

Does the problem go away by itself?

Since you suggest that the modem's DSL light never goes off, your "distance" would seem irrelevant to your problem.

But, of course, if you use words like "internet line drops", how is one to know that you mean something entirely different from what those words appear to mean?

It seems to me that your problem is almost certainly related to your own local application usage and configuration.

But there is no harm in:

Learning how to get your basic stats from your modem, such as
DSL-uptime
Sync rates
Line capacity (aka RCO aka theoretical max rates)
Attenuation, SNRM
Error rates

This happens to my connection too, almost everyday.

But only on my wireless connection.

I had Bell before and this never happened, I am using speedtouch 516 connecting to a linksys wireless & wired router.

xDSL linestate up (downstream: 5056 kbit/s, upstream: 800 kbit/s; output Power Down: 7.5 dBm, Up: 12.5 dBm; line Attenuation Down: 17.0 dB, Up: 9.0 dB; snr Margin Down: 9.5 dB, Up: 17.0 dB)

these are my line stats. any1 please tell me if they are ok. thank you.

edit: to put in bridge mode i had to uncheck DHCP in modem. i unchecked DHCP in the router as well. will this make a difference in connecting laptops wireless ?

i am fairly new at this so i dont exactly know if those stats are good or bad.

Power levels are reduced because of low Attenuation (proximity)
but your SNR Margin values don't really concur with this scenario.

Unfortunately, static numbers (in opposition to long-term curves)
don't represent the whole day so it's difficult to deceipher what's
behind this...

From the Teksavvy site:

SN Margin (AKA Signal to Noise Margin or Signal to Noise Ratio) Relative strength of the DSL signal to Noise ratio: 6dB is the lowest dB manufactures specify for modem to be able to synch. In some instances interleaving can help raise the noise margin to an acceptable level. The higher the number the better for this measurement.
6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
11dB-20dB is good with no synch problems
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding

Line Attenuation
Measure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem: maximum signal loss recommendation is usually about 60dB. The lower the dB the better for this measurement.
20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues

I am located at Finch/Yonge area and am exhibiting similar issues you guys.

Internet goes up and down random. Definate packet losses while pinging www.google.ca ...

TSI tech seem to see that my modem remains connected but I cannot surf the internet.

I live in Etobicoke and I too have been experiencing daily drops for half to 1 hour. Its been going on for a week now and when I called in a few days ago, the Teksavvy support rep mentiond that Bell lines in the west end are experiencing major issues and they have created a ticket but the problem still isnt resolved. This is seriously getting to be a major nuisance. I'm thinking about canceling if they dont fix this issue in the next few days. I'll be calling support today and getting to the bottom of this.
