I guess it has only been a little over a week, but am I wasting my time waiting to get an hd box. I would really like to give mediacom a chance, but don't want to wait 2 weeks and hear nothing. What is causing the shortage, everyone switching from satellite? /end sarcasm |

| Thanks for the heads up. I don't think I am going to wait 10 weeks when I can probably get dish or direct in a couple days. Its kind of a shame, not sure how they can pick up business if they can't offer hd. I feel sorry for the techs and customer service, really puts them in a tough situation. |

| reply to IowaStudent "Don't forget about severe thunderstorms."
Really? About two weeks ago (June 17th/18ish) one night when we had severe storms my cable TV was completely knocked out too. The internet worked fine, but the TV went out right while I was trying to get information about a tornado warning. So it can happen with cable as well.
And, we had a lovely cable outage this past Sunday morning when it was perfectly nice outside, it lasted about four hours. Analog TV was fuzzy, digital was dead, internet was dead, phone was obviously dead.
Every service has its benefits/weaknesses. Not being able to get an HD box, I'd say that's a HUGE weakness. I have mine, but I'm afraid it's starting to die or have problems and knowing I can't replace it with another one if something goes majorly wrong is distressing. -- You're watching Sports Night on CSC so stick around... |

I'd have to agree with danawhitaker being a cable customer for ~10 years. It also doesn't take a tornado of a storm to knock out our *analog* cable TV and/or cable Internet service in our part of Des Moines.
I can only assume there is some weak or non-functioning battery backups in the field and power interruptions in those areas to cause outages during storms. In much of those storms, my own neighborhood has not been the one to lose power so I'm not sure where the power issue lies but given the length of the network, the power issue could be a ways away from your neighborhood. There has also been more than one time that our headend had a power issue resulting in some outages.
Of course your mileage will vary, but since cable's system depends on good battery backup and good neighborhood power, it's not immune to thunderstorms. |

| reply to IowaStudent said by IowaStudent :Don't forget about severe thunderstorms. As others have said it affects cable as well (my charter service frequently went out along with HD channels going missing for entire weekends when there weren't any storms.)
I now have 3 HD DVR's from DirecTV with 500GB hard drives in them and HD on demand and whatnot. |

1 edit | reply to danawhitaker Let me clarify What I should have said is Thunderstorms effect's Satellite MORE then Cable that however isn't to say that Thunderstorms can't take down Cable as well, it is just that thunderstorms have a tendecy to mess with sat. more. As like you mentioned Cable goes out as when it storms I have lost my cable at school for a brief time |

How you guys can settle for having to wait for an HD Box is beyond me. I have 3 HD DVR's (got one free) and have on demand and basically love my dish... I understand people who are in apartment complexes and whatnot but if you own your own home a dish would be the way to go. |

What are people's experience with waiting on a list for the HD receivers? I'm moving to Moline, IL in on Friday and I was put on the list because they have neither HD or HD/DVR receivers available. I was put on the wait list in Iowa City and was told it would be 6 months to a year. They had some in stock but they were for new customers only. I went through several layers of customer service without getting any help. I finally called the corp office and the city cable TV administrator. I don't know which one did it, but I had my DVR the next morning. |

| reply to whatthe so mediacom is going to proactively contact everybody on every HD DVR waiting list and immediately get them a box? or just the lucky few that haunt this site. what kind of micromanagement of inventory is going on locally that is being super ceded by corporate office? Big surprise cap ex is down at Mediacom, don't buy the equipment your customers are begging for. Too bad their can't be a digital transition every few years to force peoples hands to subscribe to a pay TV service. It's the only reason Mediacom's subscriber numbers are up |

I can understand a waiting list every once in a while (inventory issues can occur occasionally), but I don't understand why it just goes on and on... I've said it for the past couple of years that mediacom only spends x amount of money per month to buy boxes. The lists will only get longer in the next 2 months because students will be returning to college, and the NFL will be starting up a new season soon, plus add college football. |
