| reply to hacked said by hacked :the teksavvy tech staff put the modem in bridge mode and said to put the router in pppoe mode and said it shud work fine after tht. im not usin MLPPP. im usin the default router login to setup pppoe. it does start to work fine until after a few hours it loses connection. all the lights on the modem and router lights are on as it shud be when it does work. but when i open int explorer or firefox it says page cannot be displayed cuz no internet available. how do i check line attenuation and SNR margin ? edit: im assuming i shud use DMT to get the line stats? and if i do shud i be connected directly to the modem or shud i be connected to the modem through the router? modem is speedtouch 516 (bridge mode) router is linksys wrt54 G (pppoe mode) Can you check the hardware version of your router? I'm assuming it's V5.0 or higher. »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys_WRT54G_series
Were you doing Torrents or Games (p2p) at the time?
. . .
If the modem's DSL light never drops or flashes, I wouldn't waste my time chasing after "DSL problems". You can determine whether you have lost sync without consulting the modem:
When you lose sync (DSL connection), your PPPoE session is terminated. After DSL re-syncs, a new PPPoE is established, and you almost certainly get a new (dynamic) WAN IP address.
Thus, if your WAN IP address does not change (or your router's log indicates no PPP disconnection), you can be quite confident that your modem did not re-sync, and therefore, that your problem is not caused by any "DSL problem".
. . .
Of course it is easy enough to connect (directly) to the modem and check the DSL uptime.
. . .
When the problem happens, can you access the router's web interface? Does it show a PPPoE connection, with a WAN IP address and a WAN gateway IP address? Can you ping the WAN gateway?
If not, can you reconnect PPPoE?
If not, can you reboot the router?
Or can you not access the router's web interface any more? If so (only if your router is unresponsive) ... power cycle.
((if your router has no power switch) I would unplug the power from the back of the router to minimize surges -- but this may not always be best. I would only cut power as a last resort if the router becomes unresponsive.)
If resetting the router "fixes" the problem (and reconnecting PPPoE does only sometimes), and especially if p2p is involved, or even many frequently auto-refreshing web pages, then you almost certainly have a connection-surge problem related to NAT/conntrack table running out of space.
The obvious (user-level) fix is to reduce your BT and game (steam!!) configurations to be the minimum.
If you are able to run something like Tomato on your router, you have other options. |
