Re: The grinch who stole a homer

Sorry rules are rules, notice in the MLB or The Minors they wait until the player reaches home to mob him.
If that's your argument, then it's clear a mistake was made. From the article:

For another thing, that's not even the rule! The rule states that the first infraction calls for a warning.

Yep - take away the Pirates' 1960 World Series rings, because the third base coach patted Maz on the back as he rounded third on the series ending homer.

I would like to see a copy of the rule that the article allegedly states as fact.

not.
Not really since he "didn't assist him to base" 7.09h

Then by that "standard", the softball player's team mated didn't "assist her to base" either by giving "high fives". You can't have it both ways.

The bottom line is, the umpire didn't know the rules, and was suckered into making a bad call by an unscrupulous coach that had a "win at all costs" mentality and exhibited the worst of sportsmanship.

That's why I hoped my last post cleared up my standing, I see nothing saying that they cant high five them. So I see no reason for them taking away the HR. Again I don't know if softball rules are different or NCAA. But I assume they don't follow MLB rules.

Regardless I officially change my position. Also what gets me is the coach forced the Ump to change the call.

That's the part that gets me too. If it was just the Umpire making a bad call, it's a little different. But that the Coach pushed it is just not right.

The league follows NCAA Softball rules with some sections agreeable to modifications; however, rules regarding baserunning (Section 12) cannot be modified.

The exact rule is 12.4.15, a rule that clearly stated the batter is out in those circumstances so long as the team has been previously warned for violating 12.4.15.

I assume the rules mean the warning should come in the same game, given a 0-0 score, I don't think the warning could have come in that same game.

Nevermind I somehow missed Tao's post and was putting the same thing in.

I remember being warned several times over the years about this rule and always thought it was kind of stupid in this scenario but have never seen it used. Figures this would be a case of it being used incorrectly. I wonder if the warning is a change in the last 30 years or so?
