 | [Cable] Used cable moden any good? I recently saw a used RCA cable modem (model # DCM245R) for $5.99 at my local salvation army store and am wondering if this is a good basic (first time) cable modem for use with comcast?
It looks to be in very good shape and comes with the software install disk.
I noticed it is on the comcast compatible modem list, it's only 6 bucks, so I figure it's worth the gamble.
Anyone who has used the modem and can comment on if it's a good modem or not?
Thanks very much. |

Theyr'e going all 2.0, 3.0. beyond taht those units were/are notoriously bad. They go weak that power supply connection so drop due to that (there was a recall at one point), & they have lousy shielding so get ingress issues from anything/everything |

 | reply to dave340 For $9.99 shipping, and $3/month you can get a docsis 3 modem, you can buy one for ~$80... its probably worth it |

 | reply to dave340 I'm using a Moto SB5100 I found in a car from the auction at work, Comcast activated it with no issues.
I found a 2Wire Home Portal at the local thrift store too, too bad DOCSIS is MAC-bound for authentication than user/pass like PPPoE/DHCP DSL connections. |

It's MUCH worse than docsis 1.1: "Capable of receiving data at rates of up to 3000kbps" »support.radioshack.com/support_a···6077.pdf Docsis 1.1 is capable of receiving data rates at up to 43mbps. -- »Check this out! |
