HN9000 FAP Monitor

If you have just one PC there are any numbers of ways to keep track of packets in/out (many software firewalls have such a feature), but if you have a small network that approach would be problematic.

Just spitballing a bit as I'm in the same boat as you. If you can't get real-time usage data off the HN9000 (which is obvious place to get it) how about getting it from the router/gateway. Theoretically, you should get the same usage info from the gateway and HN9000. Haven't tried either one of these ideas yet (I've used DD-WRT before but didn't play with its SNMP implementation) , but will.

1. Most residential routers standard firmware don't support SNMP. But there are 3rd-party firmware that do (flavors of DD-WRT). I wonder what a combo of: Linksys (or other supported router) running SNMP via DD-WRT and and a free SNMP monitoring tool such as cacti or STG would get you.

2. Tomato, another 3rd-party firmware, has bandwidth monitoring tools built-in.

As zvolts said, there are many ways to measure traffic from a specific computer or on a LAN.

The issues that have not been solved for the 9000 that hnFAPmon solves for all the legacy modems are 1) the issue of monitoring on a rolling 24hr basis, and not a calendar 24hrs, and 2) refilling alloted bandwidth concurrent with depleting that same allotment.

As you contemplate additional equipment or software, you need to keep those two issues in mind and whether they are being addressed.

I haven't seen a decent solution yet. There is a shareware opportunity laying out there, it just hasn't been picked up yet by a software developer.

There is no doubt that there is some money to be made by a freelance software developer. So maybe someday someone with programming language skills will move out in the sticks, get Hughes service, and decide to take it on. But, as the cellular companies expand their network, that tends to reduce that possibility.

A lot of the Hughes-using programmers are mobile, which means no 9000 to program against!

My thought is Hughesnet is just lazy.If they can monitor the data flow and the HN9000 keeps this log.Then Hughesnet needs to get off thier rears and provide this utility to their customers.

It really is that simple.It should not be a tremendous undertaking for them.I mean come on they got a satellite in outer freaking space.

Hughes is unlikely to do anything that encourages people to use their maximum bandwidth.

Reason? Simple math. Customers x maximum bandwidth > bandwidth available.

The average customer at Hughes has to use less than 1/3 of their available bandwidth to make the whole thing work.
