Hmm, I don't see how I missed your post.

To answer your question, the Earthlink supplied DSL Modems store your Username and Password so that you don't have to use any Icon in Windows to log on. If you prefer to use the PPPoE in the Computer instead of the PPPoE in the DSL Modem that is a personal choice but there is a procedure to clear out the saved settings in the Modem by placing it into Bridge Mode so it doesn't block or interfere with the Computer trying to log in after the Modem has already done so.

I had a windows XP computer. Any major changes (like running the recovery console) would require me to enter my EL userid and password (as I did when I first signed up with EL). That system was getting "flaky", so I bought a new computer running windows Vista. I plugged my ZyXel 660 dsl modem into the new system, clicked IE icon and was immediately connected to the internet. I did not have to enter any EL specific info, I did not have to run any IP setup stuff.
How am I connecting without telling EL what my userid and password are?
