.mkv file info

I've used GSpot for years, to determine audio and video information about multimedia files, but it's coming up short with .mkv files. VLC media player doesn't give me specifics. Any suggestions on a (prefearably) free piece of software that will give me details?

I could be wrong, but I am fairly certain I use VLC Player for it.

MediaInfo can analyze mkv files for you:
I see this in the license agreement when starting an install:
The software installer you are about to initiate utilizes the OpenCandy, Inc. recommendation network in order to provide you offers that may be of interest. By clicking on the "I agree" button below, you agree that OpenCandy may collect and use certain information obtained in connection with this software installation in accordance with the policies and practices set forth in OpenCandy's Privacy Policy
I wouldn't touch this software with a 10-ft pole.

Well I got my version 0.7.5.2 a long time ago without any other third party software installation. And have kept the installer ever since. And the software is well known in the video world for analyzing files and is very good at what it does. So if you can find an old installer without the third party installation you should get it. But I will say the software is the best analyzer I've used and accurate.

.mkv is Matroska file.
its a container for many formats.
windows mediaplayer classic with ffdshow audio and video filters play it very well.
.mkv is usually muxed HD video with muxed ac3/dts audio and sometimes subtitles.
i use VOBsub to display/turn off the subs, ffdshow codecs (with enhancement filters configured) with the matroska filter and haali splitter/renderer for video, ffdshow codecs for audio (with channel mapping customized), dc-dsp filter with octimax and volume logic for audio.
playing an .mkz 1080p container file through the hdmi @ 1080p on a 52" 1080p set, it actually looks way better than a BD player directly connected.

Or just use ps3 media server to stream it to the ps3, saving yourself a DVD and preserving the ability to display in HD(which most DVD players lack the ability).

Anyways, VLC does have strange problems with random samples of certain formats. I would go the route of replacing the codecs, not necessarily the media player. Try a full install of Klite mega codec pack. Just be sure to uninstall previous codecs. I normally hate packs, but this one is very comprehensive and I have been using it for years with no conflicts among codecs. It's almost foolproof. I also have had no issues with mkv or any other files, using these codecs. I tend to use Media Player Classic, which does get my nod as best overall media player for video under Windows. It will play anything you throw at it with these codecs. Plus, it's open source.

Re: .mkv file info

yeah, k-lite full codecs with ffdshow audio/video codecs, haali media splitter, vob-sub, vp7, xvid, madflac & ac3 filter, combined with media player classic.
really great rendering if configured correctly.
i also use dc-dsp filter with octimax 1.5100 as a dynamic range auto adjuster.
i typically like to utilize the mixer in ffdshow audio and map only the center channels to both left and right @ 1.5 each channel for ac3/dts (i prefer dialoug instead of backround music and sound effects).
in ffdshow, i use swscaler for chroma/luma sharpening and sometimes framerate doubler for choppy low bitrate videos (really does great for this), denoise 3d luma/chroma for noisy over compressed video.
i just wish there was some way to have these filters work with live camera streams such as video conference in aim/msn/yahoo.
since i switched over to vista, i have not been able to make it work for live streams.
